In 1994 in the time span of about
100 days, 800,000 Tutsis people were killed during the
Rwandan genocide by government sponsored Hutus. Many countries like
the U.S. just stood back and watched. Many Rwandans fled the country
becoming refugees. Rwanda has now undergone the development of peace.
As more and more Rwandans are hearing the news they continue to flow
back into the country. Many families made their way into the
hills of the country in fear for their lives. Now they find it safe to
return. |

Now that the civil violence has
subsided many Rwandans are repatriating their country. They have
spent the last 10 years living in the Democratic Republic Of the Congo.
Humanitarian agencies have been giving much of the asssitance in
helping the returning citizens of the nation. Unfortunately the
flow of food into the country has been cut. The UN world food program
anticipates a complete shutdown of the supplies. |
Almost 700,000 children were
left orphaned after the genocide. Much of this child's day is
spent rummaging through garbage dumps for something to sell. |

To
add to the stress on the food supply of the returning Rwandans there is
also the influx of refugees from neighboring Congo. These
Congolese are now fleeing the violence and persecution in there own
country. The WFP is
urging for almost $315 million to meet the requirements to help out the
nearly 2.2 million peoples located in these camps. |

This child digs for charcoal.
Digging charcoal can bring in $2.50 each week for his family. |
Rwandans depend on outside assistance for
aid. The population density and poor agricultural conditions have made
it vital for groups like the WFP (World Food Programme) to intervene.
