The Laughter Tree
Christmas Eve
Family fractured
Bitterly cold night
Daughter and son
Friends of both
Let’s get a tree
Why?, I thought
What the hell
Jumped in the car
Went to the lot
Fire in the drum
Few trees left
A shout
Here’s a good one
Are you kidding me?
It’s hacked on one side
Sure, grab it
Before we freeze to death here
Tie it to the car
String barely holds
Roaring down the road
It’s falling off
Peals of laughter
Open the window
Hang onto it
My hand’s freezing!
Anybody have a glove?
We’re almost home
Burst in the door
It’s warm in here!
Drag it to the dining room
It won’t stand straight
Put one ball on it
More bursts of laughter
We’ll decorate it later
Crooked tree, bare tree
Everyone’s asleep
Silent night
Christmas day
Bare tree stands watch
Love all around
Everyone leaves
O tilted tannenbaum
Shedding needles on my rug
I pitch it off the deck
All winter long
Orphan tree on its side
Lying in the snow
A reminder of the Christmas
When we couldn’t stop laughing
When my kids came to save me
With a tree I hadn’t realized
I needed in my home
