Stubborn
It seems that the way
that people have related to each other
throughout time
is that some,
through tiny subtle influences,
mark themselves
or more correctly
induce others to mark them,
as special in some way.
Once so marked
they continue directing their influences
but bolder now
deciding for others
and about others
forcing people to submit
and directing others to do their work
meting out punishments
giving out rewards
until they are satisfied
with the things they have done to people
and with the things they have made other people do.
Those not so marked
seek to be marked
or
in most cases
seek a safe niche
where they can best endure
the things they have to do
and that are done to them.
It occurred to me one day
that the common criminal,
though perhaps having few other admirable traits,
may
in part
have chosen his path
even if without deliberate forethought
as a way of saying
“I will not play your game.
I am not marked
and will never be marked
and am therefore denied privilege
but I refuse to seek your approval.
You will not determine how I live.”
