I Saw Two Lovers
I saw two lovers standing outside.
They hugged as if never to let go.
Sometimes they would step back a little
so that they could look into each other’s eyes,
but each time they did so
they would quickly entwine again.
When they relaxed their hold and stepped back
they would smile at each other as if they shared a secret.
And I suppose they did.

As they clung to each other
they would sometimes rock together
not dancing
but moving as though the motion
could somehow bring them even closer.
They kissed
little kisses
but seemed most to want to press their bodies together.
When they could delay no longer
they pulled reluctantly from each other
but were still joined by one hand.
Gradually their palms slid apart
until only one finger was linked.
Sad yearning smiles.
And then goodbye.
