YELLOW JACKET

A misdirected yellow jacket
erratic in its flight
seems to know its presence
is a source of household fright
We seek our insect arsenal
to free ourselves from harm
a spray can filled with poison
extended from my arm
I point the nozzle upward
never once having lost sight
of the menacing invader
that comes in broad daylight
I push the little button;
Aghast, to no avail!
No spray comes from the pinhole
I feel my face grow pale
That moment that I looked away
I lost sight of the bee!
I brush myself and duck my head
and to the next room flee!
Timidly I peek around
to see if I can spy
the ominous intruder
thats put my home awry.
I grab a handy swatter,
bravely meet the battlefield
a nearby buzzing makes me drop
the weapon that I wield
I bend down to retrieve it
And say something profane
because I realize that I
have lost the thing again!
I hear the children’s school bus
I try to warn them from the floor
My six year old comes boldly in,
the bee flies out the door!
