Try not to become a man of sucess.
Rather become a man of value.
- Albert Einstein

Do not wait; the time will never be "just right."
Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have
at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.

Scouting is like a Golf Ball

When golfing was first invented, the ball they used was perfectly round and smooth. However, each time the ball was used, it would get little dents in it from being hit with the iron clubs. The dents didn't look very good, and probably were thought of as damaging at first. But it didn't take long for the golfers to realize that the MORE DENTS the ball had, the FARTHER and STRAIGHTER it flew. Soon after, using the dented, experienced golf balls as a model, they began to manufacture balls with the dents already in them. Thus the balls we have today will fly much farther than any of the first golf balls they started with, because they have learned from the experienced balls of the past.

Scouting is a LOT like a golf ball. Each time we learn a new skill, or earn a merit badge, or even when we try to learn something and don't succeed the first time, it's like adding another dent or dimple to our ball. The more skills we learn, the more experience we gain, even if we fail sometimes, the more dented our ball becomes, and the farther and straighter we will be able to soar down the course of our lives.

Maybe thats why most Eagle Scouts seem to soar farther and straighter than others. It's not the Eagle rank itself, its all the little dimples and dents working up to it that taught him how to fly.

(Veteran’s Day 11/11/05)

I always wonder about people that want the freedoms and abundance in our
country, but are not willing to lift a finger to defend it.  There are
people in this world that are dying to kill people like him just because he
is an American - no other reason.

I believe every person is put on this earth to do something and that date
for death was determined long before the date of birth.  I never worry about
my relative in Iraq.  He is doing exactly what he wants to do and I would
rather he live to be 100, but I would rather he die serving his country in
Iraq then at the hands of a drunk driver in his home town.

Rules guide actions
By Mark Hood
(From the Topeka Capital-Journal Published Monday, November 21, 2005)

Your rules of the world, spoken and unspoken, are the guiding principles for all your actions. We all have them. They are the driving force behind our beliefs, dreams, motivations and human interaction.
The sum of all your rules is displayed in your character and is the building on which your destiny is etched.
1. Life is a privilege.
2. The world never has been fair, but your world has pure perfection. What is, just is. And what isn't, just isn't. Learn to accept it.
3. Change what you must, and accept what you can't.
4. We all will suffer at some level, but the suffering eventually will lead to learning and enlightenment.
5. You are the center of your own world, but the more you embrace others, the richer and fuller your life will be.
6. Once you find your song to sing in this lifetime, you better be singing it as loudly as possible.
7. No one is normal. We are all just a little off center, and that is perfectly OK.
8. Perfection is an abstract idea, but seeking it is a lifelong process.
9. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. At times they appear to be baby steps, but at least they are moving forward.
10. The more responsibility you take for all of your actions, the less you will blame others and the more power you will receive.
11. When you act out of love, you never lose. If love doesn't seem to work, try to love anyway.
12. It all begins with forgiveness. Start with yourself, and move outward to others. Lack of forgiveness only harms those who can't let go.
13. Always look for the bigger picture. If you can't see the silver lining around the dark clouds, you are looking in the wrong places.
14. Everything significant has taken time to develop. Nothing of importance comes easily.
15. Choosing optimism over pessimism is an attitudinal shift.
16. Count your blessings because you have many. Be grateful for what you have, not for what you don't have.
17. Everything eventually works out, but you still need to work at it.
18. Everyone has stress, but you don't need to be stressed out.
19. We are all in a constant state of change. That is called the essence of excitement in life.
20. Life is an endless possibility.
21. If these rules of the world don't work for you at this time in your life, then start developing your own.
In the final analysis, if your life's goal as a human being is to live fully, to love, to learn and to take time to laugh, then you have found the way to leave a positive legacy.

Some people day motivation doesn't stick.  Well neither does a shower - that's why we advice you take one every day. - Zig Zigler
You must take personal responsibility.  You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.  That is something you have charge of.  You don't have charge of the consellations, but you do have charge of whether you read, develop new skills, and take new classes. - Jim Rohn
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain
If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call to make, who would you call and what would you say?  And why are you waiting? - Stephen Levine
