First stop Shanghai a very large city in south east China, considered the silk capital of the world it also boasts a massive industrial infrastructure as well as a fresh water seaport. A mix of old traditional homes and shops (lower area of photo) and modern skyscrapers, every where you look you see new buildings under construction.
Mabel and CY, my hosts, took me to a teaming open air market one afternoon. Above is a little shop selling pearls, beads, gewelry, etc. below is looking out the open front of the shop into the market. there were rows upon rows of these little shops in tent like structures in this market. I bought some long strings of pearls, two Tommy Bahamas silk dresses, and a beautiful silk scarf. The scarf was about $5 and the dresses were about $15, amazing!
