| Notes on "Franking" Franking is the term used for the practice of marking an envelope with an official signature, initials or some sign to show that the sender is allowed free mailing priviledges. In Canada, free mail may be sent from and to the following: Members of the House of Commons* (eg. Parliament.), Members of the Senate of Canada, the Governor General, the Speaker or Clerk of the House of Commons or Senate, the Parliamentary Librarian, and the Associate Parliamentary Librarian. Members of the Ontario Legislature do not enjoy franking priviledges, so to write to Premier McGuinty or any other M.P.P. at Queen's Park you will need to affix sufficient postage. In 2006 this meant fifty one cents for an envelope or postcard. Please keep collecting and sending in the O.N.R. postcards! See also www.canadapost.ca (search "franking" a little ways down their pricing guidelines page) Related links: Elections Ontario, also three main Ontario political party home pages: (1) Conservatives, (2) Liberals, and (3) NDP. *Glossary |
