Video clips on these pages are usually stored in .AVI, .MPG or .WMV formats.  This is done for a variety
of technical reasons with respect to file sizes and download times.

If easy access was the sole issue we would probably use uncompressed AVI, but these files would be
very large -- a problem with people with older computers and slower modems, and limited disk space.

By far the easiest-to-make-and-share video clips in recent years were done with the Sony "Mavica" line
of cameras. These cameras made raw, short clips that could be stored on a floppy disc or mini-CD, and
the files would play back on almost any IBM-compatible PC running Windows.

Processed videos (clips that have been edited and where titles and datestamps have been added) are
easy to save in AVI format, although the average size for even the shortest clips will quickly rise to 2-5
megabytes.

"WMV" was Microsoft's newer format, and was usually associated with Windows XP and
Windows Movie
Maker,
a program which came with XP and (especially following tweaks) "Service Pack 2".

We also have one computer with 64-bit Vista on it which may have more codecs. Anyway this page is being updated, so you may want to flush your system's cache before loading it anew.
