BASIC PAGEMAKER COMMANDS FOR AESCULEPIUS 2003
Notes taken by Julie Saunders from the Nov 2002 Workshop
Naming files:
- Give file names page numbers, and then a subject in brackets just for your own reference; ex. PG002-003 (basketball)
Settings to change before you do anything:
- Element > Link Options > select that you do not want to store copy in
publication
- CMYK > get rid of the RGB from colours menu (delete it by dragging it to the garbage can on the menu)
- File > Preferences > General > use picas
- File > Document Setup:
- Number of pages: select 2
- Start on page #: need to select an even number,
- or it won’t give you a double page spread
- Margins: inside 1, outside 3, top 2, bottom 4
- Layout > Columns: ex. Could use 5 columns,
- with 1 pica in between
Working on your file:
- File > New
- Don’t run any faces or text thru the gutter (between the 2 pages of the dps).
- Only use frame shapes with the X’s inside; to draw an exact square with them, hold down shift while drawing.
- Zoom out by pressing control and the magnifying glass at the same time.
- Right click to get a pop-up menu; this has the Fit in Window command, which is a useful way to zoom out to see everything.
- To undo, press Control Z.
- Element menu: has to do with shapes and frames.
- To link text boxes, so that long blocks of text flow from one to another,
select the red tab at the bottom, and drag the chain symbol to the next box to
link.
File > Place: to place a photo in a box
- Element > Frame > Separate Contents: to be able to resize photos within the frame. Hold down shift while resizing (otherwise you could stretch the photo and change its proportions) and when it is the right size, choose Frame >Attach Contents.
- With type, be careful if it is so large a size bec it gets squished automatically to fit into the column.
- Control J brings up colour menu. Check in the colour menu that you always have Process colour selected (it tends to revert to Spot colour, but that costs a lot more to print).
- Element > Arrange > Send to Back (to get overlapping elements in the order you want).
- If you are wrapping text around a polygon, you can adjust the clipping path to wrap tight to it.
- Get rid of the text box outline by going to Element > Stroke.
