Operant Conditioning at the Memphis Zoo

(work in progress- started on 4-26-99-updated 6-22-99)

Operant conditioning at the Memphis Zoo takes on many shapes and forms in many of the zoo's animal departments.  It utilizes behaviors that are naturally found in each species and shapes them into behaviors that can be utilized for such things as physical exams, animal behavior demonstrations for the public, and also for various medical procedures such as vaccinations or even blood draws.  The conditioning has an additional purpose- to help provide a stimulating, interesting environment for the animals!

Listed below are the various species that the zoo is currently working with in terms of operant conditioning/training.  Feel free to click on each species in order to learn more not only about operant conditioning in those species but also about the people responsible for making it happen.
