THE TRUE CONFESSION OF TERACHI SHINYA

Shinya sat and watched as Kyo untangled netting. Kyo smiled up at
Shinya once he saw the other standing there. "Hi Shinya."

"Hi." Shinya smiled. "What are you doing?"

"Untangling this so that we can catch fish."

"You catch fish with a net?" Shinya blinked.

"You can. Do you want to watch me do it?"

"Okay!" Shinya took up some netting. "Do you need help?"

Kyo smiled. "If you want, but I'd feel guilty having a pretty girl
like you work!"

Shinya blushed. "I don't mind. I don't mind. I'm bored, so, I want
to help." He took up the rope netting and started to untangle
it. "So... Toshiya said that Die and Yoshiki are the only ones
without a koi..."

"Yeah."

"So... what's your koi like?"

Kyo smiled. "He's a cute guy. Short, like me, with brown hair..."
he sighed. "He's a great guy." Shinya nodded.

Suddenly, Kaoru stomped past, but then returned to talk to
Kyo. "That bastard wants us to speed up the ship."

Kyo's eyes widened. "Speed up? But we're already going too fast!
We're going to hit trouble if we go faster!"

Kaoru sat down. "I know. We're all going to die with the risks he's
taking."

"It's even worse than last time." Kyo pouted.

"Anou..." Shinya stood up. "I'll leave you two alone..." He started
to walk to the kitchen, suddenly feeling hungry. He sat down on a
stool and rested his head on the counter. "Toshiya... I'm hungry..."

Toshiya moaned on the floor. "But I don't wanna get up..."

Shinya peered over the counter to see Toshiya sprawled out on the
floor. "Toshiya..."

Toshiya looked up to Shinya. "Sure you can't just gnaw on your arm
for a while? At least until I wake up? I didn't get any sleep last
night."

"Why?"

"I was busy..." Toshiya pulled himself up and started to make Shinya
food.

--Shinya's Journal--

June 23, 1864

Today, I start the journal father told me to keep on the ship. I had
boarded yesterday, but as expected, I was too busy getting settled
to write. Yesterday, I met most of the crew: Toshiya, the cook; Kyo,
the cabin boy; Kaoru, the first mate; Die, another sailor; and there
are a few others on board, one of which is a short brunette that is
often seen with Kyo. I've also met the Captain, Yoshiki.

Yoshiki is a gentleman, and very kind to me. However, for some
reason, the crew doesn't seem to like him. I heard Kaoru saying
something today about making the ship go too fast, but I hardly think
the crew should get worked up about that.

Kaoru seems to keep to himself, and I don't have much to say about
him other than I haven't seen him smile.

Kyo is very nice and is teaching me about the ship. I'm learning
about a sailor's life from him.

Toshiya is also very nice. He talks to me alot and is becoming a
good friend.

Die... Die is nice, I suppose, but he teases me so much! He's forced
me to keep a mouse as a pet! I can't believe it!

Well, I'm going to stop writing for now.

Shinya walked out of his room quietly and paused for a moment as he
heard Toshiya's voice talking softly. He walked toward the kitchen
and thought he heard another voice. He peered into the room and saw
Toshiya leaning across the counter and Kaoru standing at it, a hand
behind Toshiya's neck and bringing him close, kissing Toshiya.
Shinya watched until he heard a whisper in his ear, "Spying?"

Shinya spun around and was about to say something to Die, who was
standing there, but Die pulled his arm and took him outside of the
cabin area. "Die! Let go of me!" Shinya yanked his arm away and
glared at Die. "What do you want?"

Die went behind Shinya struggled to get away, but Die held him and
whispered in his ear, "Look..." Shinya stopped and followed to where
Die was pointing into the sky. It was night by this time and all the
stars were out. Die pointed to the full moon. "Isn't it
beautiful?" Shinya nodded. "Do you know the constellations?"

"No..."

"Well, it's a clear night... I'll show you some."

"It's cold..." Shinya shivered.

Die smiled. "Wait." He took off his jacket and helped Shinya put it
on before wrapping his arms around Shinya again. He pointed up into
the sky and found the dippers, Orion, and about five others before
Shinya realized he was in Die's arms. He struggled to get out and
started to run away, but Die took his wrist and pulled him
back. "Look! A shooting star!" He pointed up. "Quick! Make a
wish!"

Shinya bit his lip. "A wish?"

"Yes, if you make a wish, it'll come true. Now, quick! Before it's
too late!"

//I wish... I wish to find true love when I get home...//

"Did you make one?"

Shinya nodded. "Hai."

Die smiled. "Okay. Let's go inside so you don't catch cold."
Shinya nodded and Die followed him to his room.

Shinya looked at Die quizzically. "Why are you following me to my
room?"

Die grinned. "Well, for one, you are wearing my jacket. For two, I
need to help you with Mouse-san, don't I?"

"Oh... yeah... Mouse-san..." Shinya opened his door and walked in,
followed by Die.

Die went to Mouse-san's cage and opened up the door, allowing the
rodent to climb up on his hand. He smiled and rubbed it's head with
his finger. "Now, Shinya, see that next to the cage?"

"The tiny bowl with the pellets?"

"Hai. Put that in the cage."

"Okay." Shinya walked over to the table and put the food into the
cage. "Now what?"

"See the bowl with the water?"

"Hai."

"Put that in there too."

"Okay." Shinya put it inside and looked up. "Anything else?"

"Hai. Say hi to Mouse-san. You don't have to pet him right now if
you don't want to, but say 'Hi Mouse-san! I'm Shinya! How are you?'"

Shinya shook his head. "No! I will not be reduced to speaking to
animals!"

Die pouted and held Mouse-san up to his face. Looking the fuzzy
creature in the eye, he said sympathetically, "Shinya doesn't love
you Mouse-san! He's so hateful, isn't he?"

Mouse-san squeaked.

"Really? You think that of him?"

Mouse-san sniffed Die's nose.

Shinya watched Die, only half paying attention to the conversation,
until he walked to his bed and sat down, hugging his knees and
looking sad.

Hearing the squeak of the bed when Shinya sat down, Die looked over.
He looked at Shinya for a while before putting Mouse-san back in his
cage and kneeling in front of Shinya. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." He turned his head away.

"Come on... something's wrong.. I'll listen!"

Shinya looked back to Die and saw a smile that caused him to feel
warm. "You won't laugh?"

Die gave a small laugh. "Not unless I'm supposed to."

Shinya laughed a little too. "Okay..." He saddly smiled. "I have a
dog. My parents took him with them when they went off to America, so
I haven't seen him and I miss him..." Shinya sighed. "Seeing you
like that with Mouse-san reminded me of Puppy..."

Die smiled. "You named your dog Puppy?"

Shinya nodded. "Is that bad?"

Die shook his head. "Iie... It's cute..." He patted Shinya's
head. "Like you."

Shinya blinked. "Like..."

Die stood up. "Well, you'll get to see him in a few months, ne?" He
smiled. "I have to go to sleep. Early morning." He bent down and
quickly gave Shinya a kiss on the cheek. "Oyasumi." He whispered
before straightening up and walking out.

Shinya blinked in shock as his hand flew up to his cheek and he
blushed hotly. He bit his lip. //Why did he...?// He looked to
Mouse-san. "Do you know?"

Mouse-san just sniffed in Shinya's direction and turned around to
curl up and go to sleep.

Shinya smiled. "Sleep..." He turned off the cabin light and curled
up under his covers, not bothering in taking off his clothes, or
noticing he was still wearing Die's jacket.
