KENDO!
    Mayumi...
   ...and the sword!
I caught sight of my first Kendo class when my school nurse, Mayumi-sensei, took me to the practice hall, or "dojo" where a few of our own boys, and about 30 other boys and girls, practice daily.  A traditional Japanese sport, Kendo is artful, soulful, and good exercise all in one. This martial art was originally done by samurai who learned the "way of the sword" ("Ken" means "sword" and "Do" means "the way"). Now, students practice with "shinai" or bamboo blades.

The concept of
Kendo is: "To mold the mind and body / To cultivate a vigorous spirit / And through correct and ridgid training / To strive for improvement in the Art of Kendo / To hold in esteem human courtesy and honor / To associate with others with sincerity / And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself. Thus will one be able to love his country and society / To contribute to the development of culture / And to promote peace and prosperity among all people. The boys and girls, ranging from 4 to 16, were lightening quick and graceful beyond words. They each have their own helmet, sword, and outfit, and they have to demonstrate good discipline and restraint at all times. It's character building at its ultimate best!
