It is a popular spot in North Carolina because of its scenic beaches and historic sites.

The History of the Outer Banks

One of the first colonial settlements, Roanoke, was set up by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584. This colony was lost, but it still served as a basis for American settlements. The Outer Banks were later used as a home for pirates, such as Blackbeard. One of the first battles of the Ironclads took place on near the Outer Banks during the Civil War. There were so many wrecks at sea near the coast of the Outer Banks that multiple lighthouses were built to guide sailors.

On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Brothers completed the first successful powered manned airplane flight from Kill Devil Hill, near Kitty Hawk. When WWI started, many people saw German submarines off of the Outer Banks coast. When WWII came, they saw German submarines again off the coast. After WWII, this became a major tourist site in North Carolina.
