Easter Chicken in a Basket Egg Cover

Materials:
Small amount of worsted weight yarn (4 ply) (Yellow, White, Orange, Brown)
Crochet hook, size G

2 plastic eyes

Glue

HDC: yarn over (yo), insert hook in next st, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 1 lp on hook, yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps, yo, draw through last lps on hook to complete the dec.

Size Approximately 4 “ tall when finished

Chicken: (Using yellow)

Ch 18; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next 4 ch, (2 hdc) in next ch, [hdc in next 5 ch, (2 hdc) in next ch] twice; join with a sl st to first hdc: 21 hdc.

Rnd 2) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next 5 hdc, (2 hdc) in next hdc, [hdc in next 6 hdc, (2 hdc) in next hdc] twice; join with a sl st to first hdc: 24 hdc.

Rnd 3) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next 5 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc isee special sts, (hdc in next 6 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc) twice; join with a sl st to first hdc: 21 hdc.

Rnd 4) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next 4 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc, (hdc in next 5 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc) twice; join with a sl st to first hdc: 18 hdc. Do not end off.

Joining, Tail, & Head: (Using yellow)

Row 1) Ch 3, fold chicken in half so that joining is at the edge of work; (3 dc) in same st and through the corresponding hdc on back (tail made), working to close opening, hdc in next hdc through both sides, sc in next hdc, sl st in next 4 hdc, (dc, 5 trc, dc, 2 hdc, sc) in last st (head made). Fasten off; secure ends.

Comb: (Using white)

Row 1) Join yarn to first dc of head with a sl st; (ch 2, dc) in same st, sk next st, [sl st in next st, (ch 2, dc) in same st, sk next st] 3 times, sc in last 2 sts: 4 scallops. Fasten off; secure ends.

Tail Feathers: (Using white)

Row 1) Join yarn to 3rd ch of beg ch 3 on row 1 (tail) with a sl st; ch 4, (ch 1, dc) 4 times in same st, ch 1, sk next dc, hdc in next dc, ch 1, sc in next dc: 7 sts/ 6 ch 1-sps. Fasten off; secure ends.

Beak: (Using orange)

Row 1) Join yarn in same st where head is worked, with a sl st; ch 1, hdc in same st. Fasten off; secure ends.

Basket: (Using lt brown)

Rnd 1) Starting at bottom: ch 4; 11 dc in 4th ch from hook (first 3 ch skipped count as first dc); join with a sl st to first dc: 12 dc.

Rnd 2) Ch 1, (2 sc) in joining; * (2 sc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in back lp of first sc: 24 sc.

Rnd 3) (Working in back lps only); ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in back lp of first sc: 24 sc.

Rnd 4A) (Working in back lps only); ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 24 sc.

Rnd 4B) (Working in front lps, same rnd); sl st in front lp; ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in back lp of first sc and through both lps of corresponding sc on rnd 4A: 24 sc.

Rnd 5) Ch 1, sc in joining working in back lp of rnd 4B and both lps of rnd 4A; * sc in next sc working in back lps of rnd 4B and in both lps of rnd 4A; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 24 sc.

Rnd 6) Ch 1, sl st in front lp of previous rnd; ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next sc; rep from * around; join with a s sl st in back lp of first sc and through both lps of last rnd: 24 sc.

Rnd 7) Ch 1, sc in joining working in back lp of last rnd and both lps of rnd before last; * sc in next sc working in back lps of last rnd and through both lps of rnd before last; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 24 sc.

Rnds 8-9) Rep rnd 6 - 7. Do not end off.

Edging: (Using lt brown)

Rnd 1) Ch 1, turn work, sl st in front lp of previous rnd, (ch 1, sc, 3 dc) in same st, sk next st; * (sc, 3 dc) in next st, sk next st; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 12 scallops. Fasten off; secure ends.

Finishing:

Insert egg inside the chicken cavity. Place chicken on top of basket which can be filled with grass and jelly beans if prefer. Glue plastic eyes to face as shown in photo. If desired, 1/8" wide ribbon can be used at each end of the chicken to secure to the basket. Tie into bows and trim ends.
