ABOUT
BEDLAM THEATRE
Founded in 1993, Bedlam theatre
produced original works of thearte with a focus on the collaborative process
that combines a distinctly playful performance style with elements of visual
spectacle to produce a solid body of cutting edge performances for audiences in
the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Bedlam’s work has explored a
stylistic range from broad stroke absurdism to searing emotional realism. With each new experiment, the company moves
closer to an understanding of the power and possiblilities of theatre as a
performing art. As producers, designers,
and performers, the company addresses social and political themes through an
intesnsely personal perspective that celebrates himan connections. Bedlam’s approach as an institution is one
that blends commmunity and professional art in its process and product. Along with critical accolades, Bedlam Theatre
was named “Best Theatre for Comedy” by City Pages in 2002 and had shows
in City Pages’ “Top Ten Theatre Events” in 2000 and 2002.
In 1996, Bedlam Studio was established
Minneapolis’s historic West Bank Theatre District as a factory of imagination
and creativity for the Bedlam company and as an arts
and event space for the Bedlam community. The Bedlam ROMP, a semi-monthly
event, features the regular experimentations of Bedlam along with Twin City
performing artists of all disciplines in a high energy, late night
cabaret. The studio’s lower level
features the Grease Pit community bike shop, and a Darkroom. The studio is used
for meetings, presentations and benefit events by social justice and activist
groups, dancers, artists and other Twin Cities theatre companies. Since 2001,
the summer is kicked off at Bedlam with its annual Community Ten-Minute Play
Festival. Every September and October,
Bedlam Studio is headquarters for the Barebones Productions Halloween Show, a
community art project that combines puppetry, mask-work, and more into an
outrageous performance/celebration on Halloween.
