Background of
The Olden Times
The Olden Times
is a monumental Medieval and Fantasy role playing game for the mature. The Olden Times is filled with loyalty and betrayal, with magic used for good and evil, with love both carnal and pure, and the incredible duality of human nature. "Renaissance Sunset" and "Medieval Nights" are guild-like fellowships. Monarchies ally with other monarchies with similar goals, individuals ally with other individuals with similar goals. For example Soria strives for a flourishing empire based on loyalty, truth, and valor as does Takarie. These two monarchies would be a part of Renaissance Sunset. Medieval Night monarchies ally with each other only for their own benefit, these kingdoms are selfish and wish only to gain as much personal affluence and eminence as possible. These "guilds" do not seperate the monarchies physically, only in mind and warfare...Except the message boards labeled Medieval Sectors and Renaissance Sectors, those are specifically for guild members.
This role playing game was opened on January 21st, 2001.
The Olden Times
has gone through numerous transformations over the year and twelve months since it has been established.
The Olden Times
commenced as a novice game at Homestead, then it was transferred to Geocities. At Geocities this game was altered to a more intermediate game with interesting, yet poor HTML. "TOT" was then renovated with a left frame, and again with a top frame and left frame. Now
The Olden Times
is at an apex, and perhaps it can still climb higher...
Overall Rules
- Be active. Please contact me or post that you will be away for a while and the reason that you are unable to be active.
- Keep swearing and cussing to a
minimum
You can be creative you can invent new swear words. =0D
- No despicable pictures of any sort
- No duplicate pictures/names
- I expect you to be a mature {intermediate to advanced} role player. Play descriptively and realistically.
- You may enroll any character that you desire. Please limit the use of magic in a character, such as one or two enchantments or aptitudes. I don't want this game to be overrun with invincible beings who can do anything. Vampires probably need to keep their identity secret unless they want to be hunted and unless they want to loose their prey. Limit swords women and lady knights because this is not the home of the Amazons and I want to keep the male/female ratio even.
-
I would like to stress that members of the Medieval Nights guild and Renaissance Sunset guild do not become friends or lovers. If you join at Renaissance Sunset you cannot go post at Massacre Woodland, you post at Glorified Hideaway. The
only
way you can post on the other side or become a friend or lover of another side is if you 'crossover' or betray your side. If you do this you must re-join on the opposite side and just make sure to add you are 'crossing over' or betraying whomever.
-
Another thing I stress is that you do not join your same character on both sides and live in two castles at once. First of all this is definitely
not
realistic or physically possible and secondly you can't be a member of both sides. You choose
one
side to join at and then say you are neutral but are more pure than cynical or more cynical than pure.
- Power Playing/God moding is not allowed<
- Please respect all members
- You may play as many characters as you wish but please remember they
ALL
must remain active. If you are unable to play them all, it is simple, quit some of your characters. If you are wise enough to give yourself a limit.
- Be careful, this is essentially a human--like RPG, so animals may not talk to just anybody. - Over population in one castle/Kingdom wwill not happen, so please do not invite everyone to your Kingdom. Also leave that job to the monarchs.
- End your font and any HTML
- The password to the Kingdoms board is: tot. the user name is: castles.
All lowercase
The reason I made it password protected is because I want everyone to read at least some of the rules. To post at this board and other boards you
must
be already placed at the members board.
- Questions, Comments, Concerns: theoldenntimes@hotmail.com or post on the MMB
- Please every time you join a new character go to the Member link and post your new character's necessary information!
- The most important rule of The Olden Times:
Have fun!
Role Playing
-To role play in The Olden Times you skills must meet a certain standard. Remember this is a RPG for the "mature."
-
~ The two enter quietly... The mascuu riding top his mare... Ivory hid of the creatureishimmers as the femme glances around pacing quickly... She snorts as he pats her sleek neck telling her not to worry.~
This post has some good terms but has indecent grammar {poor spelling, sentence variety and structure, etc.}, confusing sentence structure, and could easily be inserted with more exotic terms. This is an unacceptable post.
-
The midnight black friesian rears wiitth powerful hooves slicing the air. His orbs glaring around the land. Eyes clear enough you can see yourself in them. He was wild. He knew it. Shall anyone dare try to break him? He canters his hooves almost floating on air and his mane flowing like a banner in the wild wind. His pitch black coat shines in the sun. His heart wild. He would never be broken. Never ridden. He walks along. The feathers of his feet gently swaying in the wind. His neck finley arched. She trots away floating on air.
This post has some good terms, is very unique and creative and is lengthy. But fails to meet the "mature" grammar intelligence I need to see. There are numerous sentence structure problems, subject errors {she instead of he}, a few spelling mistakes, and way too many sentence fragments. This post is totally unacceptable.
-
. youthful masculine strode into thee illuminated chamber, ebony eyes scrutinizing the entities at his forehand .
This is an acceptable, but not the most advanced. I don't mind this type of role playing because it is "book like", descriptive, but easy to understand.
-
Noble dame gracefully defers to righteous king, sallying to bended knee. Zaffer oculars fasten 'pon marbled stone until such time as king bids her to rise. “Noble sir, I am but a poor traveler through your kingdom. I pray and beseech your good will to extend your hand of kindness and hospitality, kindly accepting myself and my mount as a guest. I come only to satisfy my curiosity, and perhaps find a new place of dwelling."
This post is very acceptable, even if you can replace king, bids, rise and other words with more advanced terminology. This example post exhibits advanced terms, good grammar, perfect spelling, and good sentence structure.
- If you are in need of role playing helpp drop by the MMB and the first-rate trainers of TOT will assist you.
- To travel from the joining board to a citadel you must travel through all the necessary boards this includes the "Crossroads" board, the Kingdom's main board, and any other boards you must go through to arrive at the fortress. This is to be done whenever you travel from one Kingdom to another.
- You cannot be two places at once or talk to two different people at two different places. This is not physically possible nor is it realistic.
- You must wait acceptance from Meg, Dream, or Raven until you can post else where.
- After you have been accepted, right away you need to go to the Members board and post the neccesary information. After getting accepted and added to the members list you are now an official member of The Olden Times and are welcome to post for your character.
- In this RPG you strive to hold a higher and higher position in the Feudal system. So if you are a Noble try not to marry a serf and so on.
- Limit your characters "talents" to about two or three and please restrain yourself from having the same ability as someone else. For example if someone has water, choose a different talent such as being able to breathe underwater or a totally different talent such a shape shifting into a dragon.

Warfare and Combats
- The Assassins of the Darkness are a group of alliances to the Medieval Night Kingdoms. The Guardians of the Light are a group of alliances to the Renaissance Sunset Kingdoms...Both are to be the best trained groups to be sent into battle and are to be highly respected.
-The General's are chosen by the rulers of the Kingdom. A General must be chosen carefully and must already be a Knight. The Generals control each Kingdom's army, there is but one General for each army. The General must speak with the monarch to make any decisions that may affect the Kingdom's or the armies welfare.
-The Generals and assassins for Medieval Nights meet and train at the Lair of Assassins, they may also school at Shadow’s Hideaway or their empire. The Generals and Guardians for Renaissance Sunset meet and train at the Guardians of the Light, they may also school at Heavenly Hideaway or their empire.
- A Kingdom's army may break the alliance if they attack another Kingdom (which is fine)
- Raids may be arranged but must be approved by the Ruler
- To declare war with another Kingdom their must be a meeting between the Ruler of the Kingdom declaring war on another Kingdom and their General.
- To sign a ceasefire or peace treaty youu must arrange a formal meeting.
- To become a Knight you must go through training or join with training. You start off as a Page then after years of training become a Squire then after a year or so as a Squire you reach Knighthood and you are formally Knighted by a Ruler.
- For more information on combatants go to the Positions and Social Ranks.
- Since in
The Olden Times
you strive for the best rank you may contest the current holder of the rank. Combat will also aide in maintaining positions; the top titles with only be reserved for the most superior individuals.
- Challenges for a citadel, rank, township and so on take place at Hostile Ley. After you have concluded your skirmish the result will be found by the Meg, Raven, Dream or the ruling monarch.
- Magic is permitted but only if you are battling against another magic user.
- Do not use magic (i.e. charms, chilling touch , mirror image) more than two times.
- Two dodges may be completed and two assails may be achieved. Use them wisely.
- After a kingdom under the same monarch or dynasty is challenged three times and is triumphant, it becomes unchallengeable.
- Only one challenge per week per citadel is acceptable! It’s unfair if a person has five challenges in one week.
- After all I expect NO POWER PLAYING.
-
Judgment for challenges will be as follows
. You will brawl for four, six, or eight posts {decision made by the combatants and the importance of the requested reward}
. As you construct your sentences ponder about depositing effort into the post, don't just put one sentence.
. Insulting decreases your chance of being victorious.
. Be lifelike and eloquent.
. Third, the combat is judged randomly. A coin is tossed three times. The challenger is heads. The defendant is tails.
- Remember that to be a Royal you must haave 100 Intellect-Points and to be Noble you must have 100 Intellect-Points.
- {. Thanks for Queen Gillian for the info. pertaining squires and pages and on making a school, thanks! .}
Mage-Points
- Mage-points show how powerful your character is as a healer, mage, shaman, mortal, warrior, etc.
- You earn Mage-points by having done a major accomplishment, raiding, healing others, doing combat, etc.
- Each week or so I will give a chance for people to gain points. I will post at the Challenging Grounds or the Main Healing Grounds.
- All Rulers automatically get 200 points.. Raids and combats range from about 20 to 150 Mage-points. Healing a being with a lethal wound is about 100 points. All points can and will vary depending on how well you handle the situation and how good your post is.
- All Gods and Goddesses automatically have 2,000 Mage-Points
- At times someone will not get any points for their 'act', but they get the pride of knowing they tried.
- Normal mortals that are without Mage-Points don't mean they are necessarily worse beings that others, they are just ordinary. {They are weaker than those with points, though. During combat those with points have a better chance of winning}
- If you think you have earned Mage-Points then post at the Members board telling me about how you believe you earned them. I will have a conversation with you to see if you earned them.
- If I give you a chance to earn Mage-points then you do not have to discuss it with me. I will tell you how many Mage-Points you earned and will post the points up a.s.a.p.
- If I don't put you points up within a decent amount of time remind me!
Intellect-Points
-Intellect-points are pretty much like Mage-points except they show how intelligent your character is. How well they have been schooled in literature, history, arithmetic, chemistry, herbs and so on.
- To be a Royal you must have 200 Intellect-Points. Royals are supposed to be full of wisdom and well schooled, so that they can reign wisely. To be a Noble your character must have 100 Intellect-Points. Most Nobles gain schooling because they can actually afford it and need to be able to govern their property wisely. All other social statuses do not need Intellect-point s, except philosophers, inventors, and so on, who may be in the Middle-class. They will most likely need a high amount of Intellect- points.
- To gain Intellect-points you can take tthe
Quiz
. You can also gain points on how well presented your ranks are, how precise your descriptions are on terrains, cities, towns, and villages. If your descriptions of your city, town, or village include what they produce, the terrain they are located, what sort of dwellings the citizens live in, and so on. *ponders* Can anyone else think of ways you can gain Intellect-points? If so e-mail me at
TheOldenTimes@hotmail.com
Religion
Religions must be brought to
The Olden Times
. Feel free to spread and promote your creed. Making temples, shrines, and creating literature will aide in spreading the belief. You can establish the faith permanently when at least four people follow and worship along with you. When your God(s) and/or Goddess(es) is/are considered permanent, create the God(s) and/or Goddess(es) as a character. They will reside at Shangri-la (the former Mount Olympus). Greek, Roman, Celtic, and other God(s) or Goddess(es) are welcome, so are any religions of your own creation.
Gods and Goddesses are superhuman beings or spirits worshiped as having power over nature and human fortunes. Since they are superior beings, they need to act that way
but
they can't completely rule mortals' lives. Please only play one or two Gods or Goddesses.

The Nobles have about 100,000 golds or 500,000 silvers
The Middle class have about 1,000 golds or 5,000 silvers
Vassal/Rouges tend to have only enough to keep their heads up, about five golds or ten silvers or two hundred coppers
Combatants have a wide range of finances.
Positions and Social Status
-A character's position and social statuss is what your character has worked and trained at while growing up. These are just general ranks, not necessarily is the correct order. For example a combatant that is just a
- To be a Royal you must have 200 Intelleect Points, to be a Noble you must have 100 Intellect Points. The other social statuses do not need Intellect Points.
- The Royals include King, Queen, heir(ess), Advisor, and court members
-Monarchs (King and Queen) reign over a nation, organize the lower ranks, set taxes, adjust trade routes and so on.
-The dauphins/heirs/crown princes normally are Kings under instruction and aide their father. They also are taught chivalry, combat, diplomacy, and philosophy.
-Queen's customarily regulate the citadel, organize banquets, are talented in the arts and are the “decoration” for the King, but in this RPG the female sovereign performs a primary role in assisting and reigning along side or above the King, not only does she know the customary matters of a female she also should know how to shelter herself from peril.
-Heiresses/crown princesses are schooled in commanding an empire, governing a castle, organization, proper etiquette and basic engagement.
- The Nobles include Duke, Duchess, Marquuiis, Marchioness, Barons, Baronesses and so on
-The Dukes and Duchesses are given a plot of land by the monarchs and build cities, towns, or villages on the acreage. The Dukes and Duchesses themselves reside in an estate on their territory.
-The lower Nobles have land given to them by the Rulers or by a Duke or Duchess. They can have a small township and dwell in a mansion.
- The Middle Class includes Merchants, Trraders, Artisans, Knights
-Merchants are Business owners. They can buy the item cheap from a peasant/serf and then sell it for more.
-Traders trade goods in different Kingdoms.
-Artisans make their goods and then sell it. They can make jewelry, pottery, clothing, hats, shoes, tapestry, rugs, leather goods, glassware, weaponry, and so on.
-The Middle Class live in decent residents in a city, town, or village. They often convert part of their dwelling into a shoppe, or if they are fortunate a specific establishment can be purchased or constructed for their business. Rarely, but possibly they can possess a small parcel of land.
-Personal Servants include Ladies In Waiting
-Personal Servants are only a little higher than the Lowest Class in real Medieval times but I think Ladies-In-Waiting and personal servants of a Ruler should be considered lower Royals
-They serve all above them. They can be cooks, ladies-in-waiting, maids, sweeps, lighters, stable hands, etc...
-The servants can live in the Royals domain or in an additional house for servants. They are fed and clothed by their master or mistress.
-The ladies in waiting are appointed to attend to the queen or princess.
-Vassals/Rogues include peasants, serfs, bards and bandits
-Serfs are bound to the land and owned by a lord.
-Peasants are made up of agricultural workers, including small or tenant farmers and laborers on the land.
-A Bandit is a member of a gang of armed robbers. They are much like highwaymen.
-The thief is similar to a bandit and is a rogue. To accomplish his goals, for good or ill, the thief is a skilled pilferer. Cunning, nimbleness, and stealth are his hallmarks. Whether he turns his talent against innocent passers-by and wealthy merchants or oppressors and monsters is a choice for the theif to make.
-The bard is a rogue, but he is very different from the thief. His strength is his pleasant and charming personality. With it and his wits he makes his way through the world. A bard is a talented musician and a walking storehouse of gossip, tall tales, and lore. He learns a little bit about everything that crosses his path; he is a jack-of-all trades but master of none. While many bards are scoundrels, their stories and songs are welcome almost anywhere.
-A troubadour is a performing poet who composes and sings in Provençal, especially on the theme of courtly love.
-The minstrel is a traveling entertainer, often a singer or musician.
-Bards, troubadours, and minstrels are sometimes able to move along the social ladder depending on who they entertain.
-Combatants include the King's (Or Queen's) Own, Fighters, Rangers, Paladin, Guardians, Assassins, and Mercenaries.
-Combatants are normally of noble birth but can come from most of the classes (not peasants). They have to go through years of training or prove themselves to the Royals and nobles to gain their 'Knighthood'. The are Combatants only if they have been formally appointed by a ruler. Their is an exception though! Regular ol' castle guards, gatekeepers, or watchmen can come from any class, perhaps they can even rise up.
-The King's (or Queen's) Own or Champion is the highest accomplishment of a combatant. He (or she) is the personal guard of the monarch and must be willing to risk their own life to save the King's or Queen's.
-The fighter is a champion, swordsman, soldier, and brawler. He lives or dies by his knowledge of weapons and tactics. Fighters can be found at the front of any battle, contesting toe-to-toe with monsters and opponents. A good fighter needs to be strong and healthy to survive.
-The ranger is a hunter and woodsman. He is skilled with weapons and is knowledgeable in tracking and woodcraft. The ranger often protects and guides lost travelers and honest peasant-folk. A ranger needs to be strong and wise in the ways of nature to live a full life.
-A paladin is a warrior bold and pure, the exemplar of everything good and true. Like the fighter, the paladin is a man of combat. However, the paladin lives for the ideals of righteousness, justice, honesty, piety, and chivalry. He strives to be a living example of these virtues so that others might learn from him as well as gain from his actions.
-A guardian is almost exactly like a paladin: a defender, protector, or keeper. The celebrated and notable combatants of Renaissance Sunset are known as guardians, The Guardians of the Light.
-The assassin is a murderer. He is shrewd, lissome, stealthy, and dexterous. Normally, they are hired for killing a prominent individual or they kill for their own advancement. Assassins are coldhearted and insensitive, the mannerism that allows them to murder with out a thought.
Breeding
-There is no specific place where you may meet a potential mate/companion.
-Long breeding is allowed, but make sure to signify that it is strictly
private
. -If you would like to give birth, Meg, Dream or Raven will roll a die to see if your offspring is male or female. They will also roll a die and/or draw numbers to see how many progeny.
-After seven days of pregnancy, your offspring is born. Please, post the stats of the progeny on the correct joining board.

- When you first enroll, your character’s power isn’t complete. Yes, in your character’s chronicle you might’ve described the training your character went through, but it holds no sway yet. Each week you are an active member, you proceed to the next level. Therefore, it will take seven weeks to reach Supreme. You do not have to become divine, because that means your character will become a god or goddess.
- These levels allow for some sort of balance and control on the abilities of a character and I think it allows for more realistic playing. - These levels signify how powerful your character is with their attribute(s). Therefore, if you are in combat with a Level four and you are in training level, most likely the level four will over power you depending on how their attribute(s) affect your character and on how well the other character’s attribute(s) defend their self from your character’s attribute(s).
- After reaching supreme, only one power/attribute may remain Supreme. The second most important power will be a level four and the third most important power to your character will be a level 3. Therefore, you must find out and choose which will be the most significant and potent attribute.
- Dropping your character’s attribute(s) down levels will happen. It may be used as punishment, as a sign of poor health, or injury.
- Please be aware I do not want more than one person having the same attribute. There is an exception though, if the first character with this power grants you permission to have the same attribute that is all right. The first character can say not to use the same attribute, but can allow you to have a more specific power of the same general area. For example the character that enrolled first has the power to control any aspect of weather. Another character enrolls with this power. The second character, if allowed by the first, can get a specific attribute such as controlling rain.
-
The above does not apply to Gods and Goddesses.
- Remember your character as a maximum of only two to three attributes.
- Attributes do not have to be supernatural powers. It can simply be the ability to fix things, make magnificent artifacts, or be a superb mercenary.
