Elizabeth’s heart was about to leap out of her chest. Lucky was so handsome at the candlelight she thought it should be illegal to look this good. They were eating slowly, too busy talking. They were whispering, like they didn’t want to disturb the other clients in the "restaurant". Suddenly, Lucky got up and pulled on her arm.
"-What? She asked
-Wanna dance?
-Lucky there’s no music
-Of course there is. Since when a fancy restaurant doesn’t have music?"
Lucky took Elizabeth in his arms in the middle of the cabin, while she put her head on his chest and started singing to her, his voice nearly a whisper;
I used to think that love was just a fairy tale
Until that first hello until that first smile
But if I had to do it all again
I wouldn't change a thingCause this love is everlasting
Suddenly life has new meaning to me
There's beauty up above and things we never take notice of
You wake up suddenly you're in love
Girl you're everything a man could want and more
One thousand words are not enough to say what I feel inside
Holding hands as we walk along the shore
Never felt like this before now you're all I'm living for
Each day I pray this love affair would last forever
Suddenly life has new meaning to me
There's beauty up above and things you never take notice of
You wake and suddenly you're in love
Elizabeth looked at him, ready to say something, when he took her mouth prisoner with a kiss. They were still dancing, even though Lucky had stopped singing. The melody was still going over and over in their heads, and their kisses were more tender, slower, gentler. Lucky never felt so good, so complete. This is where he belonged, in Elizabeth’s arms, forever. Liz broke the kiss and looked deep into his eyes. Sarah said to her just before Lucky called that he would try to make a move on her today, because he realized that it was really over between him and Sarah. That was why Liz was so eager to get out of the house, but Sarah was right. He was putting the moves on her, but what for? Elizabeth still couldn’t believe he liked her for her. She was sure he had some ulterior motives. The song he just sang to her had no meaning, it was just a song, she was reading too much into it, into his kisses. He told her that he was jealous of Brett, but would he be that jealous, would he still want to be with her if he knew Brett was her cousin?
They sat back at the table, but something changed and Lucky didn’t know what. It was so hard to read Elizabeth. One second she was answering to his kisses, small gestures, and the next she was shutting herself up like a clam. It was as if she doubted him, doubted that he wanted to be with her, hold her, kiss her, love her. Why? Lucky was doing everything in his power to make her understand that, but his efforts were vain. He knew that was the results of years of being compared to Sarah, and her being told over and over again she was a loser.
"-It stopped snowing, she said, getting Lucky out of his thoughts"
Lucky looked outside and all he saw was the night. It was too late to go back down now, they would get lost, but she was already up and getting dressed.
"-Elizabeth we can’t go back now
-Why not?
-It’s too late and too dark. I don’t know why way down well enough, we would get lost. I think we should stay here and wait till morning. You get the bed, I’ll get the floor
-Gram will kill me Lucky
-Well, you can try the cellular again, maybe you’ll get through"
Elizabeth took the phone and opened it. It was working! She called her grandmother. Audrey was mad, as Lucky could tell by Liz’s answers.
"I’m sorry Gram but we didn’t know it would snow -- We stayed in Luke’s cabin the whole time don’t worry. -- Actually, I wanted to go down tonight but Lucky said it was dangerous -- You prefer I stay here? -- first thing tomorrow I promise -- Well, Lucky said he would sleep on the floor, while I take his father’s bed -- GRAM! -- Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow -- Love you too"
Lucky smiled and asked what the GRAM! Was about. He had an idea and knew he was right when Liz blushed. Lucky sat by the fireplace and tap the floor, so that Elizabeth come and sit besides him. She put her head on his shoulder, watching the fire slowly dying out. Lucky had his arm around his shoulder, and he was gently passing his other hand in her hair and doing the contour of her face. Elizabeth wanted to stay like that forever, never go home to her sister, knowing that the magic she was feeling would be gone as soon as they were back in the city.
Lucky put a finger under her chin, bringing her to look at him. Her eyes were sad, and his heart broke. He just wanted to take her pain away, forever. He would, one day, when he would’ve earned her trust, and love. Slowly, he leaned down and took possession of her lips in a tender kiss. Elizabeth’s heart was beating like crazy, and she knew Lucky’s was too.
Lucky broke the kiss away. It was beginning to be a little too much for him. Elizabeth’s hands were rubbing his chest, under his shirt and he was caressing her sides a little to close from her front. He wanted to stop now before he didn’t have the will power to do so. Elizabeth was willing, to go a little further anyway, but he wasn’t. He just met her, still had to earn her trust, how could they become intimate right away? It wasn’t right. Elizabeth looked confused as why he stopped and he smiled at her.
"-Is something wrong? She asked
-Of course not, why?
-Well, I thought we were having a good time just then, why’d you stop? Never mind, I know why"
Elizabeth got up and sat on the little couch. Lucky got on his knees, walked to where she was sitting, took her legs apart and got in between, putting his hands on her thighs.
"-Wanna tell me what brought up this mood?
-What mood?
-Oh Elizabeth come on, I’m not as dumb as I look. You broke our "date" saying it was time to go home and you’ve barely said a word since. And now, you are upset because I stopped kissing you? What’s that all about?
-I was giving you what you wanted Lucky, but I guess I’m not good for that either since you broke away
-Giving me what I wanted? Elizabeth what are you talking about?
-Isn’t it why you asked me up here? To make a move on me?
-Elizabeth! God no! I took you up here so we could spend the day together. I took you up here so we could get to know each other, to show you that with me is where you belong! NOT to sleep with you! Why do you think I broke our kiss just then? Because it was moving too fast for me. Who put such a stupid idea in your head?
-Isn’t it true though? Why would you want to be with me if not for that? Even Gram asked me not to do anything stupid tonight, she must think I’m just good for that too.
-Elizabeth that’s nonsense. I am with you because I like you, I like you a lot. Now either you tell me who put such a stupid idea in your head or I’m going back down that mountain tonight and find it myself!
-Sarah she said in a whisper
-Who?
-SARAH, she said louder. She said that the only reason you wanted to be alone with me was because you thought you would score easily.
-And you believed her?
-Why wouldn’t I? She knows you, better than I do anyway, and she knows that’s what guys want from me. You think you are the first to pull something like that? You are not thank you, but you might have been the first to succeed though, she answered, blushing
-Oh Elizabeth, he said, taking her close to his heart"
So that was bothering her. She thought he couldn’t love her for her. Well, he would prove her wrong. She was better than that. Better than anyone. Sarah would pay for this, he would see to it personally.
