CHAPTER 4

Monica came back with everything to make the blood work. Nikolas had his eyes closed and she was about to leave when he talked to her.

"-Please don't. He said quietly
-Nikolas, let's get something straightt here. Not because you were a perfect match for your sister that you are gonna be one for Luke. You aren't even blood related, so the chance are slim to none
-I've always been pretty lucky, so I wwant to take that chance, even if there is only a slim one"

Monica smiled at him and started to draw his blood. She knew it was in vain, because Luke Spencer had a rare blood type, and not a lot of people in this town could match it. She had checked Nikolas' record and she already knew they weren't the same blood type, but she promised she would do the tests anyway, and she would do them. His father was the head of the hospital anyway, and she didn't want to risk having Stefan on her back from not doing what was asked by Nikolas. Everyone knew what Nikolas wanted, Nikolas got.

"-I'll be back with the results in a little while" Monica said before she left the room. She saw Stefan and Bobbie still at it in the corridor, but she passed right by them without saying anything. Sometimes Stefan didn't have his priority straight, like now. Why in the world did he want so much for Laura to stay where she was and not know her lifetime and still husband was in a hospital bed fighting for his life?

Luke was in his bed, actually wishing his life was gone. Why did they save him? Why didn't he sign that stupid form, forbidding them to reanimate him if his heart gave out? He was this close to being with Lucky again, his Cowboy, the light of his life. Sure Lulu still needed him, but she was young, she would forget about him in no time. His existence was miserable, and Laura was keeping the little princess away from him anyway. She was better off than having him, a drunken, broken man as a father. He didn't have the courage, nor the will, to go through the whole "You rape my mother" thing again with Lulu anyway, and see in his daughter's eyes the fear of being left alone with him. He had heard the nurse and doctor say he needed a transplant to live. That was where God was answering his prayers, giving him a choice. He would refuse the surgery, and end his life my doing so. He may be a coward, but the way his heart was dead right now, it was worst than at the campus disco all those years ago, where he had made the biggest mistake of his life. Only God knew what he would be capable of this time, and it was scaring him to death, knowing his life was over, he had nothing to fight for anymore.

He heard the door open and didn't open his eyes. He didn't want to see anyone, or anyone to know he was conscious. To see their sorry looks would be too much for him to bear. Once again, he didn't see that was his wife's son looking at him from the door. He only heard Nikolas' voice before the young man closed the door. "I'll make it up to you Luke, I'll pay the life debt I owe you, 4 times"

Monica was alone in the lab, running the same tests for the 5th time. What she saw was simply impossible and it was making her frown. Someone, somewhere, made a mistake. And it wasn't her.

Nikolas was back in his room and looking at the ceiling. He never thought he would come to a point in his life where he would feel so helpless. For an enemy no less. But he never thought of Luke as an enemy. Only a pain in the a*s. And he knew, him, a Cassadine, giving the organ he needed to a Spencer would only start the war again, as his father would never accept it. But Luke's situation was his fault, he shouldn't have taken the wheel after his fight with Katherine, he wasn't attentive to the road and a great man, with a family, was now fighting for his life. Well, he wasn't fighting, he was actually doing his best not to fight, but Nikolas refused to live with Luke's death on his conscience all of his life.

He was lost in his thoughts when the door opened with Monica holding a folder. Nikolas sat on his bed and winced from the pain. He tried to smile, but from the look she had, he started to cry.

"-I wanted to help him, so much. Maybe if I did this for him he would accept me"

Monica moved by the bed and took a deep breath. This would not be an easy thing to do, and Stefan probably would have her head for it. But Nikolas was an adult and therefore she didn't have to discuss anything with Stefan before telling Nikolas.

Lucky was walking back and forth in his room, wondering how to get through to his father. He knew how his father's mind worked. He would want to give up because he thought his only reason for living was dead. "Hang on dad" Lucky said, as he tried once again to wire the door. It opened and Lucky had a little laugh. He took his coat and tried to make a run for it but came face to Faison. "Out of my way" Lucky said angrily. Faison just put a hand on his shoulder and got him to walk back in the room.

"-My dad is dying. I have to go to him and you can't stop me.
-I know he is dying, quite irritant I must say, but we'll work around it, we always do. Said Faison in a monotone voice
-YOU CAN'T KEEP ME HERE! Lucky said aas he pushed his jailer.
-No, young Spencer, you know the ruless. No hands on me. Or you will be punished again
-Then let me go you coward
-I'm afraid I can't do that
-Why? My father is dying. Why are yoou keeping me here?"

Faison didn't answer, he just showed the table with the chest set on it. One win, one answer. Lucky knew the rules. Lucky didn't answer, he just took the place in front of Faison. He had to win this game, his father's life depended on it.

"-So you are saying I am a match? Asked Nikolas in disbelief."

Monica was stalling and she knew it. She just didn't know how to tell him, how to break to him that, once again, his whole life had been a lie.

"-You are a match. But like I said, that doesn't mean you are in condition to have the surgery. I won't risk your life to save Luke's.
-You will do as I ask Doctor Quartermaaine. Replied Nikolas sharply
-There is something else you should knnow. About your blood type, and therefore, your father"

Lucky threw the pieces on the floor and got up with a bang, making his chair fell on the floor. He started to knock everything off the shelves, throw everything around. He lost to him, again. He wouldn't have the chance to another game before the next week and by that time, his father would probably be dead.

"-I want your room cleaned before the lights are going out. Faison said coldly. Or you know the punishment"

Before Lucky could say anything, his jailer was gone, leaving him alone with his heartache. The young man fell to his knees as a shout of helplessness came through his throat.

"-What about my father? Nikolas asked quietly
-Your chart says you have a certain bllood type, Stefan's blood type. But the truth is, with the test I ran earlier, I found out myself, and the 5 tests I did said the same thing, that you aren't that blood type. I found it odd, since you were Luke's, so I ran a paternity test"

Nikolas' head was spinning. She couldn't be saying what he thought she was saying. His life wasn't a lie, another lie. Did his parents lie to him? For the second time? What would be the third one, to be like his brother?

"-What are you saying doctor? He asked, his heart beating.
-Stefan isn't your father Nikolas. Luuke is"
