Music notes filled the room, regular notes, almost an hypnotic rhythm, and Kiara head her father sing for the first time.
"As you kneel beside you bed tonight
Keep a little prayer for me in sight"
Lucky was listening to his father sing, his eyes closed, trying to picture his father and Elizabeth when they were his age. What would his life be like if his father hadn’t been shot?
He heard the last cord of the song and looked at Robert, his eyes full of tears.
"-Thank you sir
-Lose the sir. The name’s Robert"
Kiara looked at them, saw they were embarrassed and wanted to light the atmosphere.
"-Hey Lucky, why don’t you show my dad your great Elvis impression?
-WHAT? NO WAY! YOU SAID YOU WOULD KEEP THIS A SECRET! Lucky saw Robert laughing
-Now that I would pay to see"
Robert saw Lucky was really his son, never backing down from a challenge.
"-How much you willing to bet?
-I bet this -- he said, taking a bill of 20$ out of his wallet and putting it on the table-- that you can’t convince me you are Elvis reincarnated in two songs.
-Oh really? Asked Lucky. Well, I raise you by one --Lucky put 40$ on the table-- that I can
-I wouldn’t be fair for me to take your money. Tell you what. If you lose, you have to lend me your guitar for a month. If I lose, you keep your money plus 40$ from me. Deal?"
Lucky took the guitar away from Robert and went in front of the fire place. He felt stupid but he never said no to a dare. He placed his feet like Elvis, his knees on the side, his right arm in the air, his upper lip raised. Robert was watching him, chuckling and Kiara was smiling.
"Well, it's one for the money"
Lucky said, moving his knees to the other side, his arm still in the air, his guitar in front of him.
"Two for the show"
His hips moved back to their original position
"Three to get ready,
now go, cat, go."
His hips moved with each words, his hands playing the melody on the guitar.
"But don't you step on my
Blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay
Off of my Blue suede shoes.
Well, you can knock me down,
Step in my face,
Slander my name all over the place.
Do anything that you want to do,
But uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don't you step on my Blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay
Off of my Blue suede shoes.
Burn my house,
Steal my car,
Drink my cider from my old fruit jar,
Do anything that you want to do,
But uh-uh, honey, lay off of my shoes
Don't you step on my Blue suede shoes.
You can do anything but lay
Off of my Blue suede shoes."
Robert was nearly rolling on the floor with laughter, and Kiara applauded.
"-Now come on dad, admit he’s pretty good, said Kiara"
Lucky moved to take the money from the table but Robert took him by the wrist.
"-I said 2 songs boy. I intend to have them both. I’m even willing to throw another 20$ for a third one
-2's enough"
Lucky went back in front of the fire place and tried to control the blood that was running through the veins in his face. He sighed when he saw Robert laugh again. He hadn’t even started yet. He knew Robert would get a kick out of the next one.
"A well I bless my soul
What's wrong with me?
I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' queer as a bug
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!
My hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you thank when you have such luck?
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!
Please don't ask me what's on my mind
I'm a little mixed up, but I'm feelin' fine
When I'm near that girl that I love best
My heart beats so it scares me to death!
She touched my hand what a chill I got
Her kisses are like a volcano that's hot
I'm proud to say she's my buttercup
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!
My tongue get tied when I try to speak
My insides shake like a leaf on a tree
There's only one cure for this soul of mine
That's to have the girl that I love so fine!"
Robert was wiping a tear from his eyes from laughing so much. He had to admit, the boy was pretty good. He had Elvis right down to the facial expressions. But he wouldn’t say out loud and say he was impressed. No way, Spencer pride told him otherwise.
Robert got up and handed him the money. Lucky took it and put it in his back pockets, smiling at his father.
"-So I guess you were pretty impressed, now weren’t you?
-Not really, this is for your services as clown"
Lucky’s mouth dropped on the floor and Kiara shoved Robert. Robert laughed and shoved her back.
"-Don’t shove me. He said"
Lucky shoved his father a little harder.
"-Don’t shove her"
Kiara then shoved Lucky, really hard he nearly fell.
"-Don’t shove him!
-Ok, Robert said. Better end it there before I decided to kick both of your butts.
-Oh now that pay to see! Lucky said, using Robert’s early words."
Before Lucky could add anything he was on his back, on the floor, Robert’s knee was on his chest and he was being slapped on the cheeks by the front and back of Robert’s hand.
"-Now you owe ME money, Robert said, getting up and helping Lucky"
Robert took the guitar and sat back down, saying he would sing HIS favorite Elvis song. Kiara’s heart started to pound in her chest. She just loved when her father sang and twice in the same day was just amazing.
"Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you"
They heard a knock on the door and Robert got up, saying he would get it. He didn’t see Lucky and Kiara exchange looks. Robert was laughing when he opened the door.
"-Welcome to Graceland he said, swinging the door opened"
And coming face to face with Elizabeth.
