CHAPTER 15

Elizabeth was walking in the Spencer house like a ghost. She didn't want to eat anything, or do anything, or say anything. Even Lulu could not make her smile. Audrey's death was a shock for everybody, but Liz was the one who was taking it the worst. The day of the funeral, everybody cried. Lucky spent the day holding Liz, trying to comfort her. Audrey's will was supposed to be read that afternoon, and Liz said that she wouldn't be able to go. It would be too much for her. Lucky said the he would stay with her, but Audrey's lawyer said he needed at least one of them there, so Laura agreed to stay with her daughter-in-law.

Arriving at the office of Audrey's lawyer, Lucky was feeling guilty for letting Elizabeth alone, but he knew if he had to be there, that Audrey left something for them both. Mr. Douglas, Audrey's attorney, started reading the letter she left with the will.

"I wrote this letter tonight. I knew this was going to be my last. You see, I have been sick for quite some times now, and I fought with everything in my power to push the inevitable. The operation I had two years ago left me with a disease that was affecting my ability to heal. I've been told that I had only a year if front of me, but I don't regret anything, because it gave me the chance to get to know my granddaughters. Doctors were saying it was a miracle that, with my health, I have been able to hold that long. But I was waiting for something important I had to see, for me to die in peace, and I finally saw it today. Lucky, you are the one who brought me my dying wish. I was finally able to see my Lizzie smile with her heart, and not only with her head. She is happy with you, and when I looked into her eyes tonight, I didn't see that black place anymore. She has finally moved on, and I'm glad that you forced me to accept your marriage.

Elizabeth, the smiles I saw today warmed my heart. I know you will be okay, whatever you do with your life. I decided to give you a hand. I leave my house to Mister and Mrs. Lucas Spencer Junior, along with everything in it. The mortgage will be paid with the insurance I have on it, so don't worry about it. It will be there for you when you both get back from school. If you decide not to take it, you can always sell it. I understand that it might be painful at first, but please Elizabeth, sweetheart remember that I am finally where I belong, with Steve."

Lucky was wiping the tears from his eyes. He sure would miss her. Even when she was giving him a hard time, it was because she cared. In a way, the last thing she did for them was the best, because Lucky had no idea where they would live after finishing College, but now this was taking care of by Audrey.

Elizabeth was sleeping when he got home. Laura told him that she was feeling a little better, but she would definitely need his shoulder from time to time. Lucky was finally able to let his hurt come out, crying in his mother's arms. He had been strong for his wife, but now he needed a little time to grieve a woman he didn't have to chance to get to know better.

Elizabeth came downstairs a little later. She was looking better, but she was still sad. The emptiness she was feeling would be there for a long, long time, but she had to be strong. That's what Audrey would have wanted. Laura made diner, and they ate it silently. Even Lesley Lu was quiet, knowing something was very wrong.

Lucky and Elizabeth went to bed early. She was lying down, her head on his chest, but she wasn't able to sleep. All she could think about was the hug she had given Audrey at the party. If only she had known it was the last time she would see her, Liz would've told her how much she loved her and thanked her for everything she did. Tears started rolling down her face again, and she felt Lucky's embrace tight around her shoulders.

"-Why don't you talk to me about your grandmother? He asked"

Elizabeth smiled. He always knew what she needed when she needed it. Liz started talking about her childhood, funny moments, sad moments, dull moments she spent with her grandmother. Lucky was listening. He knew that's what she needed. To talk about Audrey so she wouldn't feel so alone. She told him their first meeting when she came to town two years ago. Sarah was not pleased to see her, but Audrey took her with open arms. She talked about all the time Audrey told her to stop smoking, not to take the car without her permission, to be home on time. She sure had her hands full with her.

"-Promise me you won't leave me. She said

-I'm not planning to go anywhere.

-I'm ready to hear what happened at Misster Douglas' office.

-Well, the lawyer read a letter your grrandmother had written. He gave me a copy for when you are ready to read it. She said some really nice things about me. Sarah is getting her car, you parents are getting her stocks and a part of her money, but we got the biggest gift she could ever had given us. I know that between that and her, we would change it in a second, but she gave us a head push in life

-Don't keep me in suspense. What is itt?

-Her house"

Elizabeth was speechless. Her house? Where she and Steve lived? How did she expect Liz and Lucky to move in where everything was about her? Lucky could read her thoughts. He knew she was scared of taking over her grandmother's space, but it was just in 3 years.

It's been a while since she said something when Lucky looked at her. She was sleeping. Her eyes were all puffed up from crying to much, but Lucky thought she looked like an angel. He held her closer to him and fell asleep.

He woke up the next morning when he heard a knock on the door.

"-Come in

-Lucky, have you seen Lulu? I can't fiind her anywhere

-I just woke up mom. It's still dark iin my room, how can I have seen Lulu?"

When he said that he felt moving beside him and turned to see Elizabeth but he came face to face with his sister. She was facing him, asleep. He didn't even hear her come in. Liz was sleeping with her arm around the little girl, probably thinking it was Lucky. Laura said to Lucky not to move and she went to find her camera. The time she took to find it, Lucky had fallen asleep. Laura smiled and took a picture. Elizabeth, blinded by the flash, woke up and was stunned to find Laura with camera in her hand, and Lesley Lu sleeping next to her.

"-I didn't mean to wake you up, said Laura, but you were just so cute together.

-What is she doing with us?

-I don't know. When I saw she wasn't uup yet I went to check up on her. She wasn't in her room, and I checked everywhere in the house. I thought Lucky might have seen her and this is where she was.

-She must have thought I needed comfortt. I want to thank you all for your support. I must have been a real brat huh?

-Oh Elizabeth don't talk like that. Yoou were grieving, and we were happy to be there for you. Now, want to go back to bed?

-No I might as well get up and let thesse two sleep."

The two Mrs. Spencer went downstairs and started making breakfast for the men of the house. Lesley Lu got down a couple of minutes later, and she was glad to see Elizabeth smiling again. They made scrabbled eggs, with french toasts and pancakes. When it was nearly ready, Elizabeth went upstairs to wake Lucky up, after, Laura had woke Luke.

Elizabeth sat on the bed and started rubbing Lucky's chest. She was asking him to wake up, calling him honey or baby blue eyes. He finally woke up and smiled at her. She smiled back, and leaned down to kiss him. He put his arms around her neck and made her fall on him.

"-Good morning precious, he said after kissing her gently

-You breakfast is ready.

-Hum, I didn't know you were that feistty in the morning

-My God, What were you dreaming about?""

Lucky laughed and got up. They came down hand in hand. Luke was looking half asleep, just like his son, and was drinking his coffee.

"-I see you got trapped too in this family gathering? Said Luke

-Yeah, tell me about it

-What do you say we tickle them to deatth and make a run for our bed?

-Well actually dad, it does smell prettty good. That's why I'm sure Elizabeth wasn't cooking

-HEY!"p> Liz hit Lucky with her fork, which got a scream out of Lucky. Luke started to laugh, saying to his son to be careful, he was a married man now, no more cute treatment and while he was saying that, he got hit behind the head by Laura. Lesley Lu was laughing to see that everything was back to normal in her life.

Thanksgiving was hard on Elizabeth, but she made it through. She didn't really feel like going back to school, but she had to. She had to finish the mural in their bedroom. Lucky was touched when he saw she was recreating the Boxcar.

On the plane back, she said to Lucky that now was a new beginning, or her, and for them because arriving at the apartment, they would really be acting like a married couple. Lucky's eyebrow rose at that statement, and Elizabeth started laughing.
