If you have the Trailmaster lift on your IFS truck you know the rear IFS crossmember they supply you with is not nearly as beefy as the factory front one. In fact the length of it is actually HOLLOW if you didn't know that. I had already BENT mine once up against the front diff and I had a big rock crawling trip coming up so I didn't want to risk bending it again. Basically what I did was I went out and bought a 10" length of 2" wide x 1/2" tall piece of steel. The piece of steel, as it turns out, is at least TWICE as heavy as the whole crossmember itself! I then took the steel to a local welder and asked him to weld it right into the crossmember. He grinded it down a little on the edges so it fit nice and snug inside the existing crossmember. He then welded it in, I painted it, and wala!!! I now have a crossmember that will NEVER again bend! It is still possible that the crossmember may dent a little since it is still hollow on the bottom, but that won't throw off your alignment like bending it will (ask me how I know) :-( This IMO is the next best thing to building a completely new crossmember, which I simply don't have the time for. Total cost - less than $2 for the steel, and $40 to have the welder remove the crossmember, grind and weld in the steel, and reinstall it. |
