A Beginner's Guide to Sex Toys
Which ones to buy, and how to introduce them to a partner

So you want to try a sex toy?  Good decision!  But how can you get your partner to go along with it?  Keep these tips in mind and everything should go smoothly.

  • If you are buying something that is meant to go inside of you, it might be a good idea to stick with something that is smaller than your partner's penis while he warms up to the idea.  After you are both comfortable with sex toys, he might be okay with purchasing something bigger.
  • Your main barrier to using sex toys with your partner will probably be insecurity.  Reassure your partner that he/she is a great lovemaking partner and the toys are not necessary-just a little extra fun.
  • Use the toy on your partner first.  Then let him or her use it on you.
  • Only buy something you are okay with the both of you using.  For example, don't buy a butt plug for your partner if you are not okay with it being used in your own butt, too.
  • Don't just pull out the sex toy and go to town.  You've heard this a million times, but COMMUNICATION is key.  So talk to your partner about it first.
  • It can be too mechanical to just use the toy.  Remember to continue touching your partner with your hands and kissing him/her.  Keep in mind that the toy should be a little something extra-don't use it as a replacement for other physical things you and your partner enjoy.
  • Anything that is meant to go in the anus should have a wide base or a cord so that it cannot get lost inside the body.  Though the vagina is a closed canal (and nothing can get lost inside of it), the rectum is not.  If you don't get something with a cord or wide base, you might end up having to go to the ER-not very romantic, I know.
  • USE LUBE!!!
