Here is what my 1992 Toyota pickup rear axle looked like while taken all apart. I removed the wheels, took off the rotors, took off the brake calipers with brackets, slid out the axle shafts, unbolted the driveshaft, drained the gear oil, and then unbolted and removed the third member or differential which goes in that big hole you see. I had Don at Roberts Body Shop weld the spider gears together on my extra differential that I bought off Ebay for $90. Then I had him hydraulicly press new outter seals and bearings onto the axle shafts. Once I got all the parts back I applied Black liquid gasket around the differential and axle shaft ends to make sure they wouldnt leak. I then let them dry for a full day and during that time I took off the driveshaft all the way and inspected the joints to make sure they were good. To swap out the rear differential with a rear disc brake kit it will take an hour to two hours and then you have to wait a day for the liquid gasket to dry for a proper seal. You can see the stainless steel brake line above the axle and the side of a brake caliper on the right. |

Here is my rear axle totally disassembled in my driveway. You can see that I dont have any fancy suspension lift yet.....I would like to put coilovers on all four corners with Volvo portal axles. But I will have to wait for an extra $10-$12,000 for that. I might get a solid axle swap kit with leafsprings from All Pro Off Road for around $1,800 plus a custom front driveshaft, and a solid front axle. But, once again I will have to wait until I get about $3,000 for that one too..... |
