Title: Berserk
Author: Miura Kentaro
Publisher: Hakusensha
Volumes: 1 - 21 (still ongoing)
Synopsis: Berserk is about the swordsman/mercenary, Gatts, and his epic fight against demons in a Medieval-like Europe. Berserk has many fantasy, horror elements in it, along with the usual ones of love, betrayal and that biggy: destiny. At the beginning of the series, the focus and main character *is* Gatts, however, the storyline then changes in volume #3  to include Griffiths, the incredibly stong yet effeminate-looking leader of a band of mercenaries called the Hawks. Gatts relationship with Griffiths is at the core of Berserk, but to reveal any more would only spoil it for you.
Review: Berserk is an amazing manga. The artwork is so detailed, it leaves you wondering how in the hell Miura-sensei did it! The plot itself is of epic proportions as Gatts isn't just fighting a bunch of stupid monsters here - politics, sorcery and religion play key roles. If you've seen the Berserk anime and liked it, then you'll probably love the manga. The anime ended at volume 14 of the manga, so there is *a lot* that you don't know! (Note: There's a debate over how to spell Gatts's  name. I think "Guts" sounds stupid, so I'm going with "Gatts.").
Verdict: Kick-ass manga that is too mature for readers under 16 (at least!). If Berserk was a movie, it'd get a NC-17 rating because the subject matter and the artwork itself is *very* adult. Yeah, there may be elves and fairies in this manga, but trust me, not all of them are cute and friendly! So, if you thought the anime was too much to handle, then do not buy the manga. Personally, I really enjoyed the anime, so that's why I love the manga too. The Japanese in Berserk is very difficult however, and a there isn't any furigana to help you read the kanji, this is probably one of those times when it's absolutely necessary to read an onliine translation.
Purchasing Information: Because Berserk is bigger than your standard manga, it'll cost you more to buy. You can find it at any store that deals in manga (Kinokuniya, etc.), or through an online manga dealer. The manga is pretty popular, so purchasing it won't be too problematic, just look for a cover like the one above.
Whatever you do, DON'T BLEED ON IT!!!!!!
