Donald K. Birr, CS1 1960-65 Photos
We had approximately 20 days at sea and then 10 days in port and then 20 days at sea again.  To relieve the boredom at sea we had a basketball court, volleyball court, squash court, movie theatre and a wood shop.  Donald Birr was in charge of the woodshop for several years.  He has sent in several pictures of items he made aboard ship.  "They are still in use in my den the sea chest is made of pine the ash tray is from one of the gun casings (top and bottom are turned out of black walnut on the lathe the spindles are maple also turned out on the lathe ) the end tables bottoms are reel ends from wire tops of tables are made of pine to look like hatch covers" says Don Birr.  Don also produced a terrific power point presentation on a mail delivery to the USS Tracer.  It includes about 6-8 different pictures and sound.  I have it on my computer but I don't know how to put it on our Yahoo website and make it work.. Contact Bill Bossert if you know how to do this..  .  .
