The USS Tracer (AGR-15) was selected as the Outstanding General Mess Afloat in 1964 over 775 other ships in the Fleet.  The ship was inspected by the local squadron, local area, West Coast area and finally the U.S. Naval Subsistence Office out of Washington D.C..Capt Herron and the inspectors from Washington were dazzled by the overall appearance of the ship.  This is a tribute to all the personnel ever on board the Tracer.  The Commissary personnel and crew won this Award in 1964 with an enormous amount of hard work but the groundwork was started years before with the high standards established by the previous leaadership.. 

The Commander of Radar Picket Squadron One, Lewis Newton stated, "Your ship being selected as the Ney Award winner has to be one of the highlights of RADRONONE history" . COMWESTSEAFRONTIER  RADM John Taylor, USN stated, "this award came as no suprise to me after visiting your ship recently and observing the general smartness and outstanding attention to detail displayed in all departments."
