Memories Jerry (mike)Mickelson RM3 (1959-61) Great seeing the pictures of some of my shipmates. Memories: : Mail drops. The excitement when word would come across "inbound plane", think everyone not on duty would rush up on deck to watch either the USAF or RCAF would make the pass and drop our mail. A couple of times we would receive some wet mail that had to be dried out . The utter disappointment when the drop could not be made due to weather or low fuel status. Conducting Tuna survey for the US Dept of Fishery(?) The lines towed behind us caught a lot of Albacore and a few angry sharks. How many of you remember the song "Please Mr.. Custer, I Don't Wanna Go" RMSN Tucker and myself dubbed in the words "Please Mr. Coski" and then put it on the speakers as the ship was getting ready to get underway. I spoke to Mr. Coski about this incident, however he had no recollection of it. I do recall LT(jg) Marcheschi having an officer to enlisted chat with the two of us.. Needless to say that was the last time that was done. Building our movie theater. How well the ships crew treated our officers. Going to NAS Alameda and getting a dozen or so nice ready room chairs so the officers could watch a movie in comfort. Must admit, we enlisted had some pretty nice seats. Throughout my naval career, it was the most comfortable and enjoyable theater in the fleet. Ahhh Yes. She was definitely a great ship, however, a ship is only great because of the crew that is aboard her. Thanks to you all who served in her. Will see you all in Philly. Mike Mickelson, RM3 |
