Sea sentries continuouly performed one of the less glamorous jobs in the aerospace defense of North America from 1959-1965. But the combination of the two capabilities built an invisible defense around the seaward approaches to North America. The AGR Radar Picket Ships were in constant contact with the nearest shore radar stations. When contact was made the information was immediately relayed to a shore based aircraft control center. If the contact was not immediately identified, NORAD interceptors were scrambled and directed to intercept and identify. |
