| These are African spiders. They are not recommended for beginners as they are classified as aggressive and need slightly more challenging care. These spiders do not have urticating hairs, so are more likely to bite as defence. They may not give you any notice of the intention to bite either. On the whole they are a shy and reclusive spider that does well if allowed to burrow and left alone. They need a high humidity. Size: 5 - 6 inches (Males can mature at just 4 inches) Heat: 75 to 80 degrees Humidity: 75 to 85 % Habitat: Terrestrial/Africa Many keepers report that they drench the tank periodically and that this is the way the spiders like it. I keep mine at a very high humidity using water bowl and dampened substrate, but you will need to keep an eye open for mites which love the damp conditions. Good tank hygiene will help to keep the mites down. One thing I have noticed is that if this species is not allowed to burrow they seem to be slow to grow, and the chances of captive stress are high. It is very satifying to see a spider sitting outside the entrance to it's burrow, they seem to be so much more settled and happy, yet you can not say why you feel that. Maybe the fact that it is so natural that pleases. These are a beautiful velvety spider that can vary in colour between moults from chocolate brown, through maroon, to a rich chestnut red. The thick legs and long abdomen make these an attractive addition to any collection. |
