Better Than You Music and lyrics by Tracey Leanne Lutz
Lyrics Verse 1: I couldn’t marry the boy next door, Or the one down the street. Keep my eyes open, that’s for, I don’t when my love I will meet. I think I’ll know when I meet him, Oh oh oh, yes I do. And who knows baby, who knows?? It could be you. Chorus 1: And I know… that I will know… Yes I will know better than you Better than you. Verse 2: I shouldn’t sleep with the boy from work, Moral decision I guess. My mind is saying it is inappropriate, My body says yes. I still know I won’t do it Oh oh oh, without some consent. But if the boy were to come and ask me, Then I will relent. Chorus 2: And I know… that I should know… Yes I should know better than you Better than you. Alternate verse: And I want you… And I need you… And I think I could love you… Once I get to know you better than you Know you better than you. Verse 3: I shouldn’t tell you I love you Until I know that it is the truth And I will ask your forgiveness If my boldness has been uncouth And I am not gonna lie to you Or play your game And I will have no guilt and I will have no regret And I will have no shame Chorus 3: ‘Cause I know… that I could love you so Yes I love you so… no better than you I’m no better than you Yes it’s true… I’m no better than you… better than you.
Background I wrote this song in 1999 for a guy that I was dating. I wrote this before he and I actually got together. It still remains one of my favourite songs I have written to this day, because this was one of the first songs I wrote where I used finger-picking instead of strumming, and writing this song helped me develop my finger-picking skills. The finger-picking pattern I use in this song is still pretty elementary, and my fingers are a lot more agile and faster now so I can use more complex patterns, but this is still a very cool song. Dedication I dedicate this song to Alan, because he is the guy I wrote it for.
