Charlie Music and lyrics by Tracey Leanne Lutz
Background Charlie is one of the first songs I wrote after I started playing the guitar again, and to this day remains one of my favourite songs I have written. I wrote it in 1998. This is the only song I have written thus far that I swear in, and also one of the only songs I have written that is not based on one of my actual life experiences.
Lyrics Verse 1: Little Charlie used to walk in the sun. Oh Charlie used to have so much fun. Mother said don’t walk in the street. Now Charlie doesn’t stand on two feet. Oh Charlie. Verse 2: Mother has to cry herself to sleep, Because of all the secrets she must keep from him. That trucker used to fuck her he made he sore. Now mother doesn’t live here anymore. Chorus: And Charlie doesn’t understand. Why’d she have to leave her baby boy for another man? Mother, mother where are you now? Mother, mother where are you now? Verse 3: Charlie doesn’t seem to have a cure. How he lives this way we’re not sure. That trucker how I wish he’d hit a tree. He wouldn’t have taken my baby brother from me. Chorus 2: Oh Charlie won’t you understand? I don’t wanna have to leave you for another man. Mother, mother look what you’ve done. What happens when I fall in love with somebody’s father’s son? Mother, mother what were you thinking of? I take good care of Charlie now, what happens when I fall in love? Mother, mother, mother. Mother, mother where are you now?
