The Golden Globes Disaster

Read my Diary
Since I was so disappointed with The Golden Globe awards this year, I decided to devote a page to my ranting. So here they are, from the top.

Best Picture - Drama.
Winner: A Beautiful Mind.
Overlooked: In The Bedroom, Lord of the Rings, The Man Who Wasn't There and Mulholland Drive.
Rant: You should not give an award to a movie simply because Russell Crowe is in it. Although I am complete hyprocrite in that I haven't actually seen the film, it doesn't look too fantastic, and Russell's accent is just plain annoying. I am not disrespecting John Forbes Nash, because I'm sure his life story is quite fascinating, but just not more fascinating than every other film that was nominated, and other films which weren't even nominated.

Best Picture - Musical or Comedy
Winner: Moulin Rouge
Overlooked: Bridget Jones' Diary, Gosford Park, Legally Blonde, Shrek
Rant: Why the hell was Legally Blonde nominated here? I mean, really! Did anyone watch that film. Where was The Royal Tenenbaums? I loved Moulin Rouge, and am happy with it winning (I would have been equally pleased with Bridget or Shrek) but get your heads out of your ass. Legally Blonde??

Leading Actor - Drama
Winner: Russell Crowe
Overlooked: Kevin Spacey, Will Smith, Billy Bob Thornton, Denzel Washington
Rant: Let's give it to Russell just because his acceptance speeches are really good.

Leading Actor - Musical or Comedy
Winner: Gene Hackman
Overlooked: Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, John Cameron Mitchell, Billy Bob Thornton
Rant: Hugh Jackman for Kate and Leopold....... riiiiiiight.

Leading Actress - Drama
Winner: Sissy Spacek
Overlooked: Halle Berry, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton
Rant: One of these things is not like the other... and her name is Halle Berry. I can think of HUNDREDS of other actresses that deserved to be nominated here, but I'll spare you the list.

Leading Actress - Musical or Comedy
Winner: Nicole Kidman
Overlooked: Thora Birch, Cate Blanchett, Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellweger
Rant: As much as I loved Moulin Rouge, I cannot believe that Renee Zellweger did not win for Bridget Jones' Diary. She was phenomenal in that movie. And Reese for Legally Blonde?? -sigh-. Oh and can we please stop nominating Cate Blanchett for everything she does? Thanks

Supporting Actor
Winner: Jim Broadbent
Overlooked:  Steve Buscemi, Hayden Christiansen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Jon Voight
Rant: Who is Jim Broadbent? Who CARES? WHY THE HELL DIDN'T JON VOIGHT WIN? (Oh and Steve Buscemi rules, Hayden Christiansen is hot and was excellent in Life as a House - and is Darth Vador, and Jude Law is a babe). Oh I just looked up Jim Broadbent, and I actually really liked him in Moulin Rouge and Bridget Jones' Diary, but I never saw Iris, so I still think Jon Voight should have won.

Supporting Actress
Winner: Jennifer Connelly
Overlooked: Cameron Diaz, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Marisa Tomei, Kate Winslet
Rant: The only rant I have over this is the many actress who were overlooked for a nomination. I didn't choose any of these performances in my
Nominations.

Director
Winner: Robert Altman
Overlooked: Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, Baz Luhrmann, David Lynch, Steven Speilberg
Rant: Steven Speilberg did a movie - let's nominate him. We'll throw David Lynch in there to make the indie folk happy, nominate Peter Jackson so the Lord of the Rings fans don't pummell us to death, put Ron Howard on the list because we may as well nominate A Beautiful Mind for every award under the sun, but give the award to Robert Altman because we won't give anything else to Gosford Park. Baz Luhrmann should have won hands down out of these nominees, but where was Cameron Crowe???????

Screenplay
Winner: A Beautiful Mind
Overlooked: Gosford Park, The Man Who Wasn't There, Memento, Mulholland Dr.
Rant: Obviously the Hollywood Foreign Press did not watch Memento.

Original Score
Winner: Moulin Rouge
Overlooked: A.I, Ali, A Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings, Mulholland Dr.
Rant: Vanilla Sky should have won - no contest. Yep, it wasn't even nominated. Sorry Nancy Wilson.

Original Song
Winner: Until.... Sting (Kate and Leopold)
Overlooked: Come What May (Moulin Rouge), May it Be (Lord of the Rings), There You'll Be (Pearl Harbor), Vanilla Sky (Vanilla Sky)
Rant: There was a song in Lord of the Rings? ooookay then. Come What May should have won. It was a really good song.

Foreign Film
Winner: No Man's Land
Overlooked: Amelie and some other films.
Rant: Amelie..... *sob*..... AMELIE!!! -sigh- oh, Amelie..... I know my opinion is biased because I haven't seen any of the other films, but Amelie was just sooooo good. There was a garden gnome in it. I mean, c'mon! How could it NOT win?

I don't really care about the television awards much, so I won't rant about them (really I don't watch enough tv to validate my opinion). But all I can say is that if the Hollywood Foreign Press has their heads this far up their asses, I can only imagine what the Academy will nominate...
