Audience recording from the 1974 Knebworth music festival, July 20, 1974, on the grounds of Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire, England.

The Knebworth 1974 commemorative set was produced by the family of Freddy Bannister, the promoter of the Bath and Knebworth rock festivals which ran between 1969 to 1979. The family produces and markets reproductions of festival ephemera (programs, tickets, posters) as well as other related material on their rockmusicmemorabilia.com website. This package contains some Van material, which is why I document it here, but as the publisher's name suggests, it may be of greatest interest to those who were at the festival itself.

The 1974 commemorative set included Freddy Bannister's 330 page history of the festivals, There Must Be A Better Way, a dozen glossy photos (mostly black and white, including one of Van), reproductions of the orginal ticket and the official program, and a handbill from the event. The 1974 lineup featured (in running order) Tim Buckley, the Alex Harvey Band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra (with John McLaughlin and Jean Luc Ponty), Van Morrison (with the Caledonia Soul Express), the Doobie Brothers, and the Allman Brothers Band.

The 1974 commemorative set also included a fairly basic 49 minute DVD titled "The Spirit of Knebworth" (by "fairly basic" I mean: no menus, no chapter markers, no narrator - it appears to be a straight-from-videotape digital copy) containing clips from what appears to be some of the Knebworth festivals; without narration it is difficult to tell which year(s) the clips are from. Minimally-packaged audio CDs of the some of the bands who appeared at the 1974 festival were also included with the set as a gift (Van, the Allman Brothers on 2 CDs, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Tim Buckley). All of the above enclosed in an 11" x 15" x 3" aqua-blue box with black and silver lettering.

The CD described here is one of those CDs, from Van's appearance at the 1974 Knebworth Festival. The sound quality is what you might expect from a 1974 audience recording (or at any rate: it is a non-soundboard recording with noticable audience chatter). Still: a nice record of a live Van appearance from that period.
