A review:
Having seen the performance, I can truly say that The Band is one of
the greatest groups of all time. Aside from The Band, Bob Dylan
stands out as a great addition to the concert, along with Van
Morrison, decked out in a purple sequined outfit. Bob rocks along
with Forever Young & Baby Let Me Follow you Down. The concert closes
with a great I Shall Be Released, which all the musicians
contributed to. This concert stands out as one of the best musical
gatherings in a great while and should be listened to or watched,
many times.
Notes:
In addition to the 2-CD version of the concert (described above), Rhino Records has
released a four-CD
box set on April 16, 2002, which features remixed tracks
and unreleased material, including two jams and performances by Emmylou
Harris, Van Morrison and Muddy Waters. Full details will be posted when available.
Martin Scorsese's landmark documentary of the all-star concert (previously available only on
video) was released as
a
special-edition DVD on May 7, 2002, with
storyboards, artwork, the movie trailer, TV ads, new interviews with
Scorsese and Robbie Robertson, and never-before-seen footage of The Band with
Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and others. Key players weigh in during two
full-length audio commentaries.
