Review by Lahri Bond:
If you are the type who stays up late every night to find out what great band David Letterman's music director Paul Shaffer will impose his keyboard playing on, then this album is for you. Acting as kind of a "greatest hit" album for each featured artist, we still are treated to great live renditions of "Friend of the Devil" by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, "I Don't Want to Wait," by Paula Cole, and a show-stopping version of "Think" by the still ass-kicking Aretha Franklin. A stranger combination is Elvis Costello backed by Burt Bacharach's piano and orchestra on the surprisingly effective "God Give Me Strength." The Chieftains join Van Morrison and Sinead O'Connor for a wonderfully flub-filled version of Morrison's MOR hit "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You." Al Green and Lyle Lovett also make an unlikely but effective combination, singing "Funny How Time Slips Away," and Patti Smith closes the album with a version of "Who Do You Love" that recalls the heyday of CBGB's in the mid-70s. An uneven but enjoyable CD if you have a hankering for a Chinese menu of artists. Still, you may find yourself hungry an hour later.
