Notes:
This is reported to be "a new 3 CD-R set from Doberman Records, that will
contain BOTH complete sets from the shows in Ross-on-Wye on August 21, 1999, plus bonus
tracks from shows in Chester July 24, 1999 and Edinburgh August 4, 1999. Usual high
quality audience recordings, with improved quality, professionally printed packaging."
Review:
This is a typical good Doberman Digital Audience Tape recording (they appear at
their best in outdoor venues). Not their very best but still awfully good
...very occasional slight distortion in the highs. Van in VERY good vocal
form. Great horns throughout and lovely piano, also. Humorously, VM and the
band lose their way on one number and the song breaks down ... on
"Moondance," of all things ... you wouldn't think it possible at this point.
A higher number of slow songs than usual (which VM himself mentions). A
lovely "In The Midnight." It occurs to me on the basis of one listen on the
run that between this and the 1999 Hay-On-Wye shows, a
live version of the
Back On Top album would be a wonderful thing ...
the songs seem to have all grown through performance.
