Glossary entry for
pastie supper
The "pastie suppers" which Van remembers buying (in "A Sense of Wonder") from Davey's chipper in
East Belfast, would be the Irish (rather
than the English) version of the "pastie supper". The Irish version pastie (and this is particulary a
Northern Irish delicacy) is round and flat, about 3/4 inch thick and consists of
meat, potato and onion dipped in batter and fried. The English pastie, on the
other hand, is a kind of meat and vegetable pie in a pastry crust. A "pastie supper" would
include chips with the aforementioned pastie.
