Jimi Hendrix & John McLaughlin
The Record Plant
New York
25 Mar 1969
aka The McLaughlin Sessions
Hendrix & McLaughlin on guitar with bass, drums, and organ support probably
by Dave Holland, Buddy Miles and Larry Young, respectively. Some limited
vocals by Jimi. The meeting of John McLaughlin and Jimi Hendrix for a jam
at the Record Plant studios supposedly happened in 1969 although some date
it as 1970. There is so much confusion and speculation about this meeting
that bootleg recordings carry different cuts called the same thing and the
same cuts which are called something different. McLaughlin met Hendrix as
a result of McLaughlin's relationship with Mitch Mitchell who invited McLaughlin
to the studios one night. And then Mitch didn't even show up, it was Buddy
on drums so who knows, maybe that sulied the ambience a bit. Stlll, these
are good quality jams by the two masters. It's clearly Hendrix's show and
sound with McLaughlin relegated to a harmony guitarist part. As I recall
reading, there were some issues with McLaughlin's guitar as he was playing
a hollow body that got easily obscured by both Hendrix and Miles.
There are a few cut spots on this cd but I think these cuts exist on all
circulating versions.
