Jimi Hendrix
Red House: Variations on a Theme
1968-70
A few years ago, Alan Douglas put out a 6 CDs for a music learning company.
With the exception of this CD, all were made up of short sections of songs,
meant to show various effects that Hendrix used in making his music. An interesting
concept, but would you want to listen to 17 seconds of Voodoo Child, followed
by 14 seconds of Spanish Castle Magic, followed by...get the idea? Which
brings us to this CD. Red House is probably Jimi's most well known blues
song, and on this CD you get 6 versions plus one done in tribute to Jimi
by John Lee Hooker. A good CD, almost definitely out of print now, though
I have seen it at the larger record chains. One note, if you listen to track
3 of this CD, and compare it to the Red House Electric Church version found
on Blues, you will notice the section where Jimi introduces the people playing
at the beginning of the song has been edited out on `Blues'.
