As one of the premier British "boogie" bands of the late '60s/early '70s,
it's widely agreed by classic rock enthusiasts that Humble Pie was best experienced
in its natural habitat, the concert stage. HP was already the subject of several
live albums from this era (most notably the classic 1971 release PERFORMANCE:
ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE) when 2002 saw the release of an archival live recording,
LIVE AT THE WHISKEY A-GO-GO '69.
This early phase of the band is usually regarded as the group's finest, as
singer/guitarist Steve Marriott had the perfect foil in the form of Peter
Frampton, just prior to Frampton launching his solo career. While Marriott's
bluesy and soulful voice was usually the talk of Humble Pie, Frampton proves
to be a woefully underrated guitarist throughout, as he reels off countless
tasty riffs and leads, especially on the album's two longest tracks, a 12-and-a-half
minute take of "Shakin' All Over" and a jamfest version of "I Walk on Gilded
Splinters" nearly twice that length.
