Mark May Band
R&R Sports Bar Hideaway
Friendswood, TX
14 Sept 2002

The date of this show is a little suspicious. The group plays several songs from the Doll Maker CD which wasn't released until Feb 2004. Mark refers to the "new CD" several times during the show so it's clear that the CD had been or was about to be shortly released. It's for sale at the show.

I've had a hard time characterizing Mark May's music. I finally relented and stuck him in the 'blues' category of my my list because on this show, he plays blues dripping songs from Albert Collins, Dickey Betts, Rory Gallagher, Allman Brothers, Tommy Castro, Steve Miller Blues Band. But he plays a wide range of styles with some rock (Santana), funk (Jr Walker) and R&B (Otis Redding)  thrown in for a good, surprising show.  Still, this is not a cover band or an imitator band: Songs like In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, get new arrangements and interpretations. Mark has developed his own unique and clean sound (no overdubs or distortion heavy chords here). If you close your eyes, you can easily see this group playing in any Texas roadhouse.
