Quicksilver Messenger Service
The Matrix
San Francisco
9-10 Aug 66
This may be the earliest known live performance of QMS. The date on this
is not confirmed but an Internet search narrowed it down to August 9 or 10,
1966. Since there are no duplicate songs, it could all be from one night,
possibly multiple sets or it could be songs from both nights. There were several
cuts in the original tape, so who can tell? There is a noticeable sound
quality change afte T6 so I'm guessing that it's from both nights. It's also
interesting to note the lyrics to T14, "Hair Like Sunshine", are completely
different for the first part of the song than any other QMS version of the
song - which possible confirms that this was an early QMS show as they were
still working out the lyrics.
Recording quality is listenable but not great like you might expect on a
soundboard. This is a very primitive stereo soundboard tape. The main problem
is lack of treble combined with an abundance of hiss. High frequencies were
rolled and the midrange was boosted for a little bit of an improvement. I've
heard worse but I don't care because this appears to be a rare show.
