Part 3. The Bonus "Sessions"
Nelson Riddle, arranger

13. Me and My Shadow (duet with Sammy (October 22, 1962 - single session)

The sound quality for the Trilogy outtakes (and "Days of Wine and Roses") is inferior to the other Reprise studio session material, though still very listenable. "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" is merely an instrumental track; Sinatra commissioned the arrangement from May, then changed his mind. (May explained that the musicological, highly technical reason for rejecting the Richard Rodgers tune was that, upon careful analysis, it was deemed to be "a buncha shit")

There were two separate sets of sessions for the "Past" portion of
Trilogy, one in July and one in September. I don't know for certain which dates would be correct. According to Will Friedwald's book, "The Song Is You", "Surrey" was only attempted in July.   . . .  so perhaps these are from the July sessions.

The three live tracks from Atlantic City are from a very good soundboard tape.

The 13-minute session excerpt for "Me and My Shadow" has better sound quality -- and a special bit of "Sam" quality
