SOME CRAFT IDEAS
CORN DOLLIES
PARASOL literally means "for the sun" and parasols date from the times when no lady of any "quality" would dream of allowing the sun to touch her face for fear of getting a suntan - only the working classes were tanned! This little parasol makes a nice gift and can be filled with sweets (sugared almonds look nice), pot-pourri, lavender etc. To make it you need a ladies handkerchief (lace trimmed looks nice when finished), a piece of dowelling - or a pencil will do, a couple of yards of narrow ribbon in a toning colour, some Copydex or a similar fabric glue, and straight (dressmakers) pins. |
LAVENDER BAGS can be as simple or elaborate as you like. They can be lace-trimmed or embroidered sachets or simple bundles of fabric tied with a ribbon - the important part is the lavender : it should be collected whilst the flowers are only just opening on a warm, dry day. Hang the flowers by the stalks tied in small bunches away from direct sunlight and in a dry place. When they are dry, the flowers will rub off the stalks easily. Use the dried flowers to fill you lavender bags - they can be placed in drawers or hung in the wardrobe, where they will give a pleasant smell to your clothes as well as warding off moths, or you can sleep with one under your pillow : lavender is supposed to be good for soothing headaches and aiding restful sleep. |
