Baby Blessing Ritual |
This is a baby blessing or naming ritual, similar to a Baptism. The timing of this ritual is up to the parents, however a waxing to Full Moon is best due to the positive growth energies. If the blessing is done at home, decorate the crib with lavender, parsley, and daisy for protection and bounty. If done outside the home you may wish to carry sprigs of fresh herbs that have special signifigance and after the ceremony dry and keep these for the child when he or she gets older. |
Ritual Soap: Elder Incense: Cedar and rosemary, lavender may also be used. Alter Decorations: Daisies, Iris, and Moonstone. The moonstone that is on the alter at the naming ceremony can be given to the child at their Rite of Passage later in life (either Graduation or perhaps the first Moon Blood). Also, white and yellow roses (or baby roses even) and baby's breath would make a beautiful picture. Invocation: A canopy of eventide spreads dark from out the glen, With ravens wings, a rising moon, and blessings that we send. To you, our friends, we build a dridge to span the air and sea, With beams of light and lavender that magic might move free. To touch the hearts of thsoe we love, The child whom now, we bless With songs of hope and harmony, sealed with a holy kiss We call upon the Goddess Minni, to hold (child's name) in Her arms With hands of warmth and comforting, And keep you ever safe from harm. (invocation taken from A Victorian Grimoire by Patricia Telesco) Activties: - Pass the child around to each guest, each guest bestowing a "gift" or blessing upon the child - Present the child to the four watchtowers and your guests - Plant a tree in the child's name somewhere special. - "Name" the baby. - Give the child a special protection amulet or charm. - Give the child gifts that reflect the Craft, but are not "craft" tools like a quilt, a stuffed animal toy, etc. Food Suggestions: Crackers with cheese, white cake. Green Witchcraft Wiccaning/Presenting (Anna Moura) After opening the ritual in the usual way, a parent should hold the child up and say: Loving Lady and gracious Lord, behold the harvest of my love, named (name). Watch over and bless this child, bringing love and joy to all his/her days. One parent may now anoint the child's brow with oil in a Solar cross within a circle. Then pat a little of the salted water on the baby's head, pass that baby over the incense burner through the smoke, and say: May the elementals cherish you and guard you. May the Lady and the Lord guide and teach you. May you live and grow in harmondy with the earth, the stars, and the unity of the Divine. Cakes and wine follows. |
