This is the second of the three harvest festivals and welcomes Autumn. The days are getting shorter and the light is once again equal with the dark. The God prepares to die. |
Alter Decorations: Brown, Red, Orange, and Other Fall Colours, Acrons, Gourds, Thistle, and Late Blooming Flowers. Ritual Soap: Marigold Incense: Myrrh, Honeysuckle, Cinnamon, and Vanilla Cakes: Apples, Apple dishes, Corn dishes Ale: Sage and rose water Colours: Red, Orange, Brown, and Gold. Invocation: Call the winds, chant the rite, Dance the fires, reclain the night, Asperge the circle, draw it round Salt of earth with water bound. Bring your censor, bless the Grail, Raise your voice, the Goddess hail, Light the brazier, carve the runes, Reach the stars, draw down the moon. Wind Father, Lord of Suns Move your power, become as one. Earth Mother, Lady Sea Share your magic, blessed be. (invocation taken from A Victorian Grimoire by Patricia Telesco) Activites: - Offerings of shells, grains, cloth, yarn, and feathers are common - Make a protection charm of hazlenuts strung on red thread. - Serve a meal of wine, beans, and squashes. - Collect milkweed pods to decorate at Yuletide. - Arrange baskets of fresh fruit for family and friends. - Fill a basket with colourful dired leaves, acorns, wheat, pine cones, and fallen pine branches and live it by your door or altar. - Make a soup of carrots, corn, radishes, potatoes, and/or onions. - Welcome Autumn. - Collect fallen leaves for your altar. Traditional Foods: Ale, corn, cornbread, goat, apples, and root crops. Herbs: Rue, almond leaves, yarrom, passionflower, rosemary, frankincense, marigold, rose hips, sage, bittersweet, walnut leaves and husks, sunflower, wheat, mistletoe, oak leaves, saffron, dried apple, chamomoile, and apple seeds. |
