Ointments
For ages ointments have been a part of magickal practices.  The most commonly known ointment is the "flying ointment."  Traditionally, these mixtures have been exterememly dangerous and containing many drugs with possibly hallucinogenic effects.  However, not all ointments are for "flying" and not all of them are exteremly toxic.  In some traditions they are stilly common in magick today.
To make an ointment you must add oils to fat or wax.  The proportion of oil to fat will determine the consistency of the ointment or salve.  I reccomend a mixture of 20% wax to 80% oil.  Basically this means, for every pound of wax or fat, one needs four pounds of whatever oil or mixture of oils to be used for the ointment.

Warning:  I do NOT reccomend the use of all these oils.  Please, do not mix up Traditional Flying Ointment.  This information is for historical reference only;  it's very toxic.
To make an ointment, you must mix the oils in a pot and heat this to about 150 degrees F.  In another pot melt your fat or wax.  I prefer using wax and highly recommend this.  Rubbing fat onto your body is rather disgusting, but it doesn't last very long either.  The bee's wax only helps the oils be in contact with your body, the herbal extracts are what does the work on your body; they are absorbed though your skin.  Slowly pour the melted wax (or fat) into the simmering oil.  Be sure to stir constantly and carefully as you are pouring the wax.  Once all the componets are combined in one pot and you have mixed them throughly, pour the solution into containers and let it cool.  I reccomend pouring the salve into glass canning jars; you may can them if you like but I think they hold it very well.  Some salves will have a shelf life of about three to five years.  It's safe to assume this with any salve unless it happens to say otherwise.  You will not need to use a huge amount of these things and you probably won't use them that often so don't make a great amount of them at once.  After three years I would closely monitor any changed in colour, odour, or potency of any salve and would toss it in five years.

Traditional Flying Ointment
The original, or close to it as we can get through records and such, was called "Green Oil or Ointment" by witches of the Middle Ages.  This was because of the use of plants.  This ointment produced psychedelic effects bringing visions and giving them the feeling of "flying" (astral projection).  This was made with mandrake or belladonna, poplar leaves, soot, and oil/fat of clove to hold the mixture together.  Due to the clove, a mild high would be achieved making the user lightheaded.  The poplar leaves would give the ointment a nice scent.  Deadly Nightshade or Belladonna, Atropa belladonna (greek for "cut the thread of life") affects the nervous system and causes changes to the muscles and also acts as an analegesic (relieves pain).  This ointment would then be rubbed on the wrists, hands, feet, and forehead and the body would begin to absorb the oils.  This brought the desired effects.  Some accounts state that the ointment was often rubbed on the broom and then inserted vaginally however, this is not "proven."  This ointment is no longer used EVER due to it's high toxicity it's terribly dangerous.  Both belladonna and mandrake are exteremly posionous plants.  Today non toxic, safer alternatives are used which do not produce psychedelic/hallucogenic effects.
