Aztec and Mayan Goddesses |
Chantico - Aztec goddess of fire, fertility, and the home. She symbolised both pleasure and pain and ruled precious stones of the earth and wealth. Her symbols were cactus spikes and a red serpent. She was invoked for fertility, domestic matters, and fire elements. Chicomecoatl - An Aztec maize goddess. Chihuacoatl - The Aztec goddess of childbirth. Coatlicue - She symbolises the moon and is the Aztec mother goddess; a life giver. Often she is shown as a woman with a skirt of snakes and claws. She is both negative and positive and can bless or punish. Coyolxuahqi - The Aztec moon goddess who symbolises the moon and element fire. "Golden Bells." Ilmatecuhtli - "The Old Princess" Aztec mother goddess who can also be invoked for fertility. Part of winter festival was human sacrfice; a woman's heart was cut out and her head severed during a procession. Itzpapalotl - A very beautiful Aztec demon with the symbols of death on her face. She symbolises the balance of evil and sensuality. Itzpapalotl was invoked for agriculture, fate, destiny, and cosmic matter, especially with the stars. Ixchel - "Lady Rainbow" she was the Mayan goddess of floods, domestic arts and matters, spinning, weaving, pregnancy, and childbrith. She is generally portrayed as being demonic, destructive, and deathly. Ixchup - The Mayan moon goddess who is married to a sun god. Masaya - The Mayan goddess of divination and fire. This goddess required that victims be thrown into volcanoes. Mayahuel - The Aztec goddess who discovered and introduced the gods to pulque. The night was sacred to her and she was seen as naked, seated on a throne of a tortoise and a snake, and holding a bow of pulque. Also, she carried a cord that was used to help women in childbirth. Tien-Hou - The Aztec protectress of people in times of crisis and sailors. Tlazolteotl - The Aztec goddess of the crescent moon and is often referred to as the dirt goddess. She rode naked on a broom holding a red snake and a blood stained rope. Tozi - The Aztec goddess of nature and healing; a mother goddes, the mother of the gods. Xilonen - Aztec goddess of maize. Xochiquetzal Ichpuchtli - The Aztec goddess of flowers and the underworld who also sybmolises artisans, children, twins, and sex. |
