Herbs and Magick

This a list of a few herbs I work with often.  If you would like a more complete list of herbs used in magick I recomend Cunningham's Engcyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham which is what this information was taken from.  These are herbs I work with, grow, and use most often both magickally and for mundane uses.
African Violet: (Saintpaulia ionantha)  This is a feminie plant ruled by the planet Venus and the element of Water.  It is said to have powers of protection and spirituality.  In magick the plants are grown in the home to promote spirituality within.  They are also slightly protective.

Agaric: (Amanita muscaria)  This mushroom is also called the Death Cap, Death Angel, Magic Mushroom, Redcap Mushroom, Sacred Mushroom, and Fly Fungus.  This plant is masculine and ruled by Air and the planent Mercury.  It is also ruled by the deity Dionysus and it has been thought that some (if not all) mystery religions of the classical times centered their secret rituals around the use of this mushroom.  It has also been used and mentioned in the occult for many ages.  It is most often commonly used for it's power of fertility and placed on the altar or in a bedroom to increase fertility.  However, this mushroom is VERY poisonous and it's unwise to use it at all.  I would reccomend that you DO NOT use this in your rituals at all.  (For more information see my Mushroom page.)

Aloe: (Aloe vera)  This is also called Zabila, Saqal, Medicine Plant, and Burn Plant.  It is feminine and ruled by the Moon.  It's element is Water and has powers of Luck and Protection.  As a houseplant it will gaurd against evil influences and prevents household accidents.  Also, the jucie from this plant can help treat burns.

Angelica: (Angelica archangelica) Also called Masterwort, Garden Angelica, and Archangel it is masculine.  It is ruled by the Sun, Fire, and the goddess Venus.  This plant has powers of healing, protection, exorcism, and can be used for visions.  To ward off evil sprinkle the plant in the four corners of your house or around the primeter.  It will also remove curses, hexes, and spells against you when added to your bath.  It can be smoked to induce visions (but I am unsure of the safety of this practice!)  Angelica should not be ingested by pregnante women and may cause sensativity to sunlight.

Ash: (Fraxinus excelsior)  This is also known as Asktroed, Jasen Beli, Nion, and Freixo.  This is a masculine plant and ruled by the Sun and Fire.  It is said to have powers of protection as well as those of health, prosperity, and is good for use in sea rituals.  Deities associated with the ash include Gwydion, Thor, Woden, Neptune, Uranus, and Poseidon.  In the ancient Teutonic religion the ash represented Ygdrasill (the world tree) and was sacred.  In ritual uses it can be used to represent the power of water and it's said carrying ash wood can protect you from drowning at sea.  Placed underneath the pillow, ash leaves will induce prophetic dreams.  Sometimes you will find a healing wand made of ash wood.  During electrical storms, be careful of the ash because it attracts lightening.

Lemon Balm: (Melissa officinalis)  This is also called Bee Balm, Sweet Balm, Sweet Melissa, and Oghoul.  This is a feminine plant and ruled by Water and the Moon.  It is reputed to have healing, success, and love.  In Arabian magic, Lemon Balm is used for love magick.  Healing magick is also commonly done with this.

Bleeding Heart: (Dicentra spectabilis or D. formosa)  This plant is feminine and ruled by Water and Venus.  The bleeding heart has powers of love and can be used to tell if your desired has feelings for you.  To do this crush the flower:  if the jucies run red they love you; if the jucies run white then they do not.  Another way to use this plant is when grown it brings love however, when grown indoors it is said to have negative energies.  To avoid this, plant a coin in the soil with the plant.  The bleeding heart is not recommended for internal use!
